state-official-says-asl-is-child-abuse

“I am not going to be part of that kind of child abuse,”
Dr. David Bruton, North Carolina secretary of Health and Human
Services, was quoted. He felt that the deaf German children
supposedly speak better English as opposed to deaf
Americans that rely on sign language.
Not surprisingly the deaf community in North Carolina is
in an uproar.

(June 1999)

Bruton, after making that comment, was removed from his job.
