surprise-board-member

A true story that happened back during the
seventies.
At the NAD Conference, there was an election
for the Board of Directors. The delegates did not
want an unpopular director to win the re-election.
They looked for a candidate but no one was willing
to run against the unpopular director.
Suddenly they found a candidate – who was popular
with everyone but knew nothing about NAD, nothing
about politics and nothing about deaf issues.
He won, surprising everyone. The unpopular
director was out for good.
Did it really help NAD? The surprise winner
never discussed anything or contributed anything
with the NAD during his two-year term.
He did not run again.
