– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Russell Harvard, the hottest deaf actor right now
this moment, was written up in a long newspaper
story. He stressed that deaf actors rarely appear
in New York playhouses, pointing out to just two
plays that involved the deaf in the past three
decades – Children of a Lesser God and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Rebecca Klooz, a deaf teacher in the Marshall Public Schools system in Minnesota, was profiled in a
newspaper story. She lost much of her hearing shortly after birth because of an open heart surgery. Her
ability to hear got worse over the years. Wearing
hearing aids she relies on lipreading to function
in a classroom with deaf kids.

People in Texas are in celebration of Erastus “Deaf”
Smith’s 225th birthday. As many of us know, Deaf Smith
was a spy, a scout and a soldier in the Texas
Revolution. He was instrumental in helping Texas
break away from Mexico. The celebration is going on
right now at the Texas Capitol. Helping orchestrate the
event is Steve Baldwin, probably the nation’s most
eminent Deaf Smith historian.

He said:
The exhibit is an accumulation of my 30-year passion on the subject matter; I chose an artistic angle to simply a crucial aspect of Texas history in which Deaf Smith made an impact in securing a pivotal victory for Texas’ independence

Deaf New Zealanders wanting to watch DVD movies
with subtitles are out of luck. It was pointed out
by deaf MP Mojo Mathers that there is no law
requiring that all DVD movies be subtitled.

– Friday April 13th

West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind
allows use of ASL in its classrooms and anywhere
on the campus. But this school has never had such a written policy on faculty and staff ASL
requirements. This may change, according to a
newspaper story.

– Saturday April 14th

The Kansas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
will be part of the state-wide reorganization of
state agencies, as implemented by the administration
of Governor Sam Brownback. How and to what extent
would it impact on the deaf agency is not yet known.

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

We have watched TV programs about undercover people looking
for things that go wrong in restaurants and in workplaces.
What about us, the deaf? Yes, but not a TV show but a government grant in Texas to help the Austin Tenants’ Council find out which landlords discriminate against the deaf that
want to rent apartments! There will be “secret shoppers”
that will pretend to rent apartments but will expose the
excuses landlords use to avoid renting to the deaf. This
grant is being funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development

have some organizations for the oral deaf.
Members in deaf organizations use ASL. Members in
oral deaf organizations communicate orally and some
also communicate in sign language.

It was the Telecommunications for the Deaf, Inc.
or TDI.
TDI was founded in 1964 to help distribute TTY

who is very good with her sign language.
She would use sign language to interpret
flight emergency instructions.
This is great for Europeans that know that

A HEARING BUSINESSMAN EXPLOITS A LOOPHOLE
A hearing owner, of a small business, is
successful. He is busy all the time and often
has to turn down more businesses.
Why does he turn down more businesses? To
expand his business, he has to hire more
employees. He currently has 10 full time employees
but won’t hire more of them.
Why? The ADA regulations do not require small
businesses with less than 15 employees to hire
interpreters if the need arises. He constantly
stays at 10 employees just to make sure he
is on the safe side of the ADA regulations!

LATE DEAFENED POLICE OFFICER WINS CASE
Karen Beasley, a detective with the Birmingham,
England police force, has become late-deafened. She
is using hearing aids to help her function with
her police duties.
She filed a formal complaint with the police
department, saying they didn’t do enough to accommodate
her hearing loss. They would not give her promotions
and extra responsibilities because of her hearing loss.
She won the case. The police department now has
to decide how to best accommodate her needs on the
force.

I still can call via Video Relay Service (VRS).

When I place a call via VRS interpreters, I began by telling the interpreter:

“Interpreter, FYI, I am Deaf-Blind”.  The VRS interpreter seems to be frozen.

I think I can read their minds: “How in the world can this Deaf-Blind man see?”

It is that “shock and awe” thing.

That brought me to the point of changing how I inform VRS interpreters about my needs.

Now, when I call someone via VRS interpreters, I say this:

“Interpreter, I have Usher Syndrome.”

The video interpreters now say this….

“You need me to change to a black top?  Can you see me?  Do you want me to sign smaller?  Do you want me closer to camera?”

Wow, what a big difference when I changed how I identified myself!

Thank you VRS interpreters for your good work.

Year 1912 – Roger Demosthenes O’Kelly graduated from Yale
University. The Yale people were saying he was the second
deaf person to graduate from that university. He went
straight to Yale from the North Carolina School for the
Negro Deaf. Coming home, he then became an attorney,
specializing in Corporate Law.

Brief summary of duties:

aesthetic aspects of three-dimensional arts. Responsibilities

with 5 plus years of experience working in the mental health field,
two of which must be in a supervisory role. Advanced ASL fluency
required.  Strong leadership, administrative, organizational and
interpersonal communication skills (both in person and in writing)
required. Strong ability to manage and complete multiple tasks,
priorities and projects as well as the ability to lead, teach, advise
and motivate staff and consumers. Responsibilities include:
Regulatory Compliance -Insure compliance with the health, safety, and
occupancy regulations and contract requirements of all relevant
Governmental and professional accreditation entities. Assure the
maintenance of DPW and other licensures as required. Budget -Insures
that program expenses are kept within budgetary limits. Work with
Operations Director and other fiscal management personnel to develop
yearly budgets.. Supervision -Maintain a supervisory process
including both individual and group meetings of all program staff for
direction, guidance and support. Communicate agency policies and
procedures, client information, and all other relevant information to
staff as needed. Personnel -Oversee and recruit, hire and train
qualified staff to provide sufficient supervision and support to meet
client needs, agency standards, and contractual or regulatory
requirements. Develop department/division standards in compliance
with agency policies. Liaison – Maintain effective working
relationships with clients, officials, families and agency personnel.
Insure full participation in an interagency planning process for
individual clients as well as for service system development and
problem solving. Provide ongoing communication with psychiatric
service providers such as the psychiatrist, therapists and
specialized consultants or practitioners as well as county and state
governmental agencies.

– INTENSIVE CASE MANAGERS: (Full time position) This position provides
resources and support to clients and their families who reside in the
community.  Duties: Responsibilities include assessing services needs
of consumers, primarily children, to insure continuum of care;
develop service plans; independent living skills instructions,
advocate for access to public & private services and programs such as
medical, vocational and other services. Qualifications: BA/BS degree
in a Human Services field preferred; or High school diploma & 12
credit hours in human/social science with 2 years mental health
direct care experience. Must have strong organizational skills;
fluency in ASL, familiarity with other visual communication modes and
language levels. Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends
as needed and travel various areas in the community. Knowledge of
laws governing the rights of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals
including IDEA and ADA a plus; and must have a valid driver’s
license.

– RTF RESIDENTIAL COUNSELORS: (various shifts available) This position
provides direct client services to adolescents, with behavioral
health concerns, in areas such as independent living skills,
implementation of daily activities, run weekly group meetings,
implementing a behavioral modification plan, assist with
homework/school projects and community integration.  Qualifications:
HS + 1 year related experience (preferably with
children/adolescents), valid drivers’ license; advanced fluency in
ASL; demonstrate competency in independent living skills; ability to
teach, advise and motivate; strong interpersonal skills.  Qualified
candidate will also be a strong team player who possesses a great
amount of patience and dedication to working with adolescents.

– RESIDENTIAL COUNSELORS: (various positions available) This position
provides direct client services including encouraging client
independence in areas such as skills in daily living and community
integration.  Duties: Provide supported living and training to Deaf
consumers with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities
living in the community; promote consumers’ independence and social
relationships. Positions open for weekend and evening shifts.
