three-magical-seasons-for-deaf-wrestlers

The years between 1918 and 1920 have been magical for
three deaf wrestlers

James Meagher won the 1918 and 1919 national AAU
wrestling championships in the 108 pound class. He
later became a sports writer for deaf publications.

Glen Smith won the 1919 national AAU wrestling
championship in the 145 pound class. While not wrestling
he was the starting center on the Notre Dame football
team.

Paul Berlenbach won the 1920 national AAU wrestling
championship in the light heavy weight division.
He was a student at St Joseph’s School for the Deaf
in Bronx, New York. He later became a pro boxer
and won the world lightheavyweight championship.
Interestingly enough, one of punches he incurred
in the ring made him a hearing person, according
to a tale!
