Tricks of trade of a newspaper reporter that was deaf

Cadwaller L. Washburn, who passed away in 1965,
was noted as the world’s top dry point etcher.
Many of his drawings are shown at museums, and
at his alma mater Gallaudet University.

He also served as overseas newspaper reporter for
the Chicago Daily News.

He covered the 1904-05 Russian-Japanese war and
also the 1910-1912 Mexican Revolution and used
notes and pen to interview prominent foreign
leaders.

What were his tricks?

He would not reveal his deafness while entering
the building, well dressed with fancy clothing,
looking very important. It was only until when
he was face to face with these diplomats that
he would reveal his deafness!
