signing the welcome of the brand-new ADA, so that
his deaf brother Frank, would understand what Tom
was saying!

………..

A newly trained sport pilot is Sheila Xu. She is deaf and
just completed a training class in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Sport pilot? It is the flying of light-sport aircraft
without the need for an FAA medical certificate.

Funding has finally been approved by the D.C. Council
to make possible the existence of Office for the Deaf,
Deafblind, and Hard of Hearing.

…………….

………………

A deaf litigant won a case in Great Britain; she said she
has issues with dyslexia, preventing her from understanding
the captions. She asked for an interpreter and was
turned down, leading her to a lawsuit against the
British cabinet that made the no-interpreter ruling.

HEARING LOSS RULES ARE CRAZY
A deaf woman with a hearing loss of 64 dB can
participate in the Deaflympics, but cannot participate
in the Miss Deaf America Pageant!
Why? Because Deaflympics rules say that deaf athletes
must have a hearing loss of 55 dB or higher to qualify. But
the NAD Miss Deaf America Pageant rules say that
deaf participants must have a hearing loss of 65 dB
or higher to qualify.
This rule is crazy!

NOTE:
NAD no longer hosts Miss Deaf America Pageants. This
video is an old one that is being run again for your
laughter and amusement!

BANK WEB SITES DISCRIMINATING AGAINST THE DEAF
More and more banks have web sites that require
the customers to listen to certain words to prove
their own identities. This is a different way of
using logins and passwords. And there are no
captions with these words.
It is discriminatory against the deaf. And it
is even double discrimination when these same banks
refuse to accept relay calls from the deaf!

This week’s ASL video in youtube:
http://deafdigest.com/videos/discriminatory/

note:
that was years ago. ADA is more strict about
banks that do not comply with deaf-friendly
rules.

He required two interpreters at all times in order to
go through his classes and his on-field training.

……..

The Burnley Football Club is one of the most famous
soccer teams in British’s Premier League. This team
had a deaf player – Billy Nesbitt who starred in
the 1910’s and 1920’s. He was considered to be
the team’s best player in these seasons. As years
passed by, he pretty much was ignored by the fans.
But in the early sixties, two life long fans
bumped into him while riding the railroad. They
then realized who he was but because of communication
issues they couldn’t communicate with him. Years
later while recalling him, these fans regretted not
trying to communicate with him – via notes or via
gestures.  This was part of a British newspaper story.

……..

In an article the Scientific American issued a warning
that CI surgeons need to balance ethnic challenges
of connecting brains to computers. In other words,
they need to use neurotechnology in a responsible way.

Indonesia has fired two Air Force officers

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center for Wireless
Technologies published results of weather and emergency
warnings survey that the deaf and the disabled were asked
to take part in. The conclusion was a hint that the deaf and
the disabled need to have their communications equipment
upgraded on a regular basis because of rapidly changing
technological times.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

ADA is now one year older. While ADA has improved the lives
of the deaf, there is much that needs to be accomplished
in the coming years. Examples are – high unemployment rates,
lack of captions on the Internet, deaf being cut out of the
loop each time there is a new invention, federal government’s
turtle-like speed in enforcing ADA regs, etc, etc.

DEAF CHILD FROM A VERY SMALL TOWN
Many small towns have deaf children.
When a child is deaf, this becomes a problem
with the parents and with the education
people.
The choices are:

1. send the child to a residential school
2. hire a full time interpreter for him in hearing school
3. hire a full time teacher for him in hearing school
4. family to move to a big city where deaf schools
are located.

Always a difficult decision to make.

A DIFFERENT JOB FOR A DEAF MAN
A deaf man in Canada has a different type of

His job is to knock on doors of homes.
When hearing people open the doors, he gives

This is for people’s dog tag licenses!
He had a card with them that he shows to
hearing people to explain what it is.
In USA, most people pay for dog licenses

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

“What does a CART provider or captioner do when the proceedings
become contentious and everyone is talking at the same time?”
Although court reporters and CART providers use the same skills and
the same equipment and software to perform many of their job
functions, this is where there is a big difference in how they
perform their job duties.

A court reporter is supposed to make a verbatim record of the
proceedings that he or she reports. If people start speaking over one
another and it is impossible to decipher who is speaking and what
they are saying, a court reporter should stop the proceedings and ask
people to repeat what they have said.? It is the reporter’s duty to
attempt to maintain a clear record.

The CART provider or captioner, on the other hand, is present at an
event to provide communication access. Because a verbatim record is
not required, the CART provider would usually not stop the
proceedings to gain control of a contentious situation.

The captioner can use parentheticals such as (simultaneous
crosstalk), (indiscernible), or (inaudible) to indicate that one
cannot understand what is being said. The consumers of the CART
services would then be able to ask people at the event to repeat or
slow down.

Just because you see someone at an event using a steno machine, it
does not mean that he or she is making a verbatim record. The goal
may be to enable the consumers of the CART services to understand
what everyone else in the room understands.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

DeafDigest also dedicates this edition to Joy Carney, who
departed us. As a young woman she was known as Joy York and
was a faithful NAD employee, and on the side, a strong advocate
for the needs of the deaf. Over the years she has continued
her advocacy with respect to telecommunications and interpreting
needs. In recent years she lived on the Delaware’s Eastern Shore
and operated her own Deaf Tours travel business while serving
as an interpreter and also helping out with the Deaf Independent
Living Association, the Eastern Shore area’s deaf social service
agency. She had a reputation for being the best interpreter on
the Eastern Shore. As a compliment to her interpreting skills,
a deaf husband and a deaf wife, going through a divorce, agreed
on just her as the interpreter, representing both sides. It was
contrary to conventional wisdom. But with Joy, it didn’t matter
as everyone trusted her impartiality!

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

The National Foundation for the Deaf has succeeded in getting
the New Zealand Human Rights Commission’s challenge of the way
The Accident Compensation Corporation defines deafness. The
challenge was because the deaf group felt the definition was
discriminatory. Next step is for both groups to go into mediation
to agree on a more reasonable definition of deafness.

Top stories about the deaf:

According to a chemistry professor, who is deaf, there
are often no ASL signs for chemical words. As a result,
instead of creating a new sign and possibly leading
to confusion among the deaf in the chemistry field,
these words are spelled out. Yes, it is time consuming.

………..

Texas Deaf Chamber of Commerce has been established
and it is said be the first one that is statewide.
The mission of hearing local Chambers of Commerce is
to advocate and promote the needs of local
businesses. Will this statewide Deaf Chamber
of Commerce promote the needs of one-man deaf
business operations such as yard work,
home improvements, home painting, body work,
auto repairs, etc? DeafDigest is curious about
that mission as Texas is quite that big a state.

……….

According to The Catholic Leader, there are nearly
25 priests that are deaf.

…………….

The FCC will soon make a decision on compensation for
Video Relay Service (VRS) providers. There is fear
that reduced compensation will force relay providers
to either scale down their operations or to completely
shut down.

She is correct – Deaf Stories (and Deaf Tales)

among deaf ex-friends.

This week’s ASL video in youtube

DEAF PRISONERS IN ENGLAND
Sad to say, we have many deaf prisoners in USA.
There are also many deaf prisoners in England.
Which nation gives better attention to deaf
prisoners – USA or England?
Hard to say, but in England there is a
“Deaf Prison Project”. It is an organization
that tries to help the deaf prisoners in England.
In USA, some states try to help deaf prisoners;
other states ignore deaf prisoners.
Deaf prisoners need interpreters, captions,
better opportunities to win parole, etc.
Are services in England better than in USA?
