Top stories about the deaf:

If all goes well, then Will Moseley-Roberts, who is deaf,
may become a physician. He is currently attending medical
school in Scotland. Does Wales have any other deaf
physicians? Do not know.

……….

A former Uber, who is deaf, was fired because of poor
ratings by his passengers. He filed a lawsuit, saying
he never signed the Uber’s technology services agreement
that would permit the company to review his ratings.
This case is in the courts.

……..

A newspaper story in New Zealand said there is a shortage
of interpreters in small towns, but not that so in
major cities.  Same as USA!

……….

All three finalists withdrew from the finalist list for the
Superintendent position at Maryland School for the Deaf. For
that reason the search has been paused.

DEAF HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WTIH SOME BARBERS
A deaf man with long hair, walks into a
different barber shop. The barber does not
know him.
He gestures to the barber that he wants
his hair cut short.
Barber is confused. Short?  Meaning
cut off almost all of long hair? Or
to cut just a little off the long hair?

At a farm, the hearing farmer was chatting with
his deaf friend.

The hearing farmer actually said:

FIGHTING OR PLAYING?
We often see dogs rough it up with each other. Are they
fighting or playing? Hint – look at dog’s tails and jaws.

We often see hearing people “rough” with each other.

Are they fighting or playing? Hearing people can tell by
listening to their voices – angry voice or playful
voices.

The deaf often cannot tell if it is playing or
fighting!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Stenocaptioners use the left pinkie, ring finger, and middle finger to
depress the initial consonants S, K, and W on the bottom row. When the K
and W are depressed together, we get the sound for the letter Q.

These letters can be used together to produce the blended sounds at the
beginning of words. With a slip of one of these fingers, a totally
different word than the captioner intended can appear.

Some examples of this would be:
She wanted chocolate and vanilla squirrel ice cream
When doing weightlifting, swats can be a difficult exercise.
The child drew a circle and a scare.

These should be read as:
She wanted chocolate and vanilla swirl ice cream.
When doing weightlifting, squats can be a difficult exercise.
The child drew a circle and a square.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

There are some prisons that do not know how to deal with
deaf inmates with health issues that require medication.
An example is the Allegheny County Jail in Pennsylvania.
A deaf inmate needed medication and repeatedly requested it
with the prison staff only to be ignored. After getting out,
he filed a lawsuit in federal court. The county then reached
settlement with him.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

The American Bar Association enacted a resolution, asking
companies to hire more and more disabled and deaf attorneys.
Will this help? Well, to date, only five companies have
pledged to hire deaf attorneys – either as outside counsel
or as an in-house attorney.

ONE IN MILLION ODDS?
This story is for Deaf Statisticians. And this is a
true story.
An accident with two cars took place in a recent
year. The driver of the first car was deaf and ASL signer.
The driver of the second car was also deaf and ASL signer.
Both drivers did not know each other but they were
able to exchange in ASL their names, their addresses and
their insurance cards.
What are the mathematical odds of this happening?
One in one million or one in one billion?

EMBARRASSING SPEECH
Few days ago, Ann Curry, who is hostess of “Today”
TV show, gave a speech at Wheaton College in
Massachusetts. She praised the college for its famous
graduates. It was the wrong college that she praised,
since there is another Wheaton College in Illinois.
It was very embarrassing.
It happened to the deaf one time. There was an
event by Metrocast in Washington, DC in early
1980’s to announce the captioning of its sports
programs. A well known deaf leader gave a speech,
praising Metromedia for giving captions.
It was very embarrassing, because Metromedia and
Metrocast names can be confusing.
But the Metrocast people did not like it !

HIRING A CONSULTANT IN A MOVIE FOR NOTHING
From time to time Hollywood people hire a deaf Consultant
to work with directors and producers in a big filming

Why? Because when filming is finished, the film editors

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

We have seen that the stenocaptioner’s left hand produces the initial
consonants in words, and we have seen that the top key for the captioner’s
middle finger is P, and the top key for the index finger is H.

If both the P and the H are depressed together, you get the M sound. With
a slip of the index finger, a captioner can accidentally turn a P into an
M or vice versa.

Some examples of this would be:
She thought his ideas were good and had some parrot.
The flags were flying at half-past.
Her favorite color was mink.

These should be read as:
She thought his ideas were good and had some merit.
The flags were flying at half-mast.
Her favorite color was pink.

The Ann Arbor (Michigan) personnel office is looking for
the perfect person for the city administrator position.
Part of the job description asks for – the physical
ability to walk, stand, stoop, bend, reach, pull, push,
lift, finger, feel, grasp, talk, see, hear and perform
repetitive motions. Because nobody is perfect, it means
the deaf AND hearing applicants would not qualify!

A HEARING PERSON’S CONFESSION
A hearing person had a confession. When he sees
deaf people using sign language to communicate with
each other, he always stares at them.
Rude ? Yes, but the hearing person said sign language
is so beautiful that he loves to watch even though he
does not understand a word.
It is the same as a deaf person watching a band, led
by a band leader who uses his hands to guide the
musicians. A deaf person may not understand music but
enjoys watching the movement of the hands.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF SIGN LANGUAGE
Many deaf people use sign language. Not every
deaf person uses ASL as their sign language.
Many immigrant deaf people use their home nation

And also, there are many deaf people that teach
themselves sign language. We also often do not
understand these self-taught sign languages.
Self-taught sign languages create problems for

GALLAUDET STUDENTS ARRESTED FOR BEING DRUNK IN PUBLIC??
Many deaf people, in the past, many years ago, suffered

People with Spinal Meningitis have poor balance at

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

We have seen that stenocaptioners write the initial consonants P and W
with the middle finger of the left hand, and when they depress both keys
simultaneously, they get the sound for the letter B.

As we have seen with other consonants, the same thing also applies when
these letters are part of a blended sound at the beginning of a word. A
little slip of the finger could totally change the word.

Some examples of this would be:
He checked the air pressure in his swear tire.
She spam across the lake.
The student won the swelling bee.

These should be read as:
He checked the air pressure in his spare tire.
She swam across the lake.
The student won the spelling bee.

The original movie version was produced in the early eighties
