Top stories about the deaf:

A linguist said:
This gradual acceptance of ASL as a foreign language
prompts the question:

is American Sign Language, or any form of sign language,
a real language?

………..

Zoom captions have been going on for some time,
and yet complaints continue to pour in regarding
time lag – between the spoken word and the captioned
word. And things are not getting any better with it,
according to critics.

……….

A Coda was interviewed in a newspaper story.
The Coda said she had problems communicating
with her deaf parents – but pretty much was
exposed to the Deaf Community because of
parents’ friends.

She probably had problems expressing herself
in sign language but had no problems understanding
what deaf people said.

……….

LSU Health Shreveport is now training physicians
on how to help deaf patients.

………………

Worksman Cycles is the nation’s oldest bicycle-maker
company, and it is located in South Carolina. There
was a story in the newspapers of that company having
quite a few deaf employees, fixing, making and repairing
these bicycles.

FOLLOWING A TALL HEARING WOMAN WITH GRAY HAIR
This is a true story. A deaf man was riding on the
metro subway. He sees the same hearing woman every day;
she is tall and she has a grey hair. They both get off
at the same station. They both also do not know each
other.
One time, the metro station train broke down.
There was so much confusion. All passengers were ordered
to get off at one station. The deaf man does not know
what was going on and he decided to keep his eye on that
same tall, grey haired woman, and follow her around. She
hops on an emergency bus and he follows her. That
emergency bus takes them both to their train station.
That tall gray haired woman saved the deaf man’s day.
In a big crowd, it was easier to find the tall gray hair
woman, as she was taller than everyone.

STARTING AT THE BOTTOM
Many of us know that Hotel Hassler, in Rome,
Italy, one of the world’s best hotels, is owned
by a deaf man, Roberto Wirth.
He grew up with just one goal – to own and to
operate a great hotel. He was willing to start
at the bottom.
For a short while he attended Gallaudet
University.
At Gallaudet, he had a part time job. And it
was a great experience for him – to learn how to
cook hamburgers – at McDonald’s!
A great journey – from McDonald’s to restaurants
and hotels all over the world before owning Hotel
Hassler.
Always important to start at the bottom. It
paid off for Roberto.

EVERYDAY WE KNOW WE ARE DEAF

Do hearing people know they are hearing
every day? Don’t know.

But deaf people know they are deaf every
day. Deaf people depend on devices; deaf people
depend on their eyes all the time. And deaf
people go to Starbucks and always point at
the coffee on the sign on the wall.

And so on.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

This week our nation will celebrate a holiday when we can slow down and
reflect on the many blessings we have in our lives.

As a profession, court reporters and realtime captioners have much to be
grateful for. Although many of us have struggled as our nation has
struggled financially, for the most part, realtime court reporters are
still able to find employment. They have skills and talents that are
necessary to record and communicate important messages in our virtual
world.

I personally am very thankful for the hard work of the realtime captioners
who bring us newscasts, sporting events, and other live broadcasts. Much
of their work must be done when others of us choose to spend time with our
families and friends.

Most sporting events take place on the weekends, and newscasts are often
during dinnertime or at bedtime for many of us. There are live events that
must be captioned on holidays. When a disaster strikes or an emergency
takes place, captioners must be there at all hours of the day and night.
Thank you to all of you who have worked hard over the years to bring
access via captioning and CART to people across America.

For all of you who read steno, may I take this opportunity to say
HAP/PEU/THAPBGS/TKPWEUFG
And for those of you who do not read steno, Happy Thanksgiving to you!

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

A deaf man in a Terp magazine!

A terp magazine published by the RID? No.

It is a magazine published by the University of
Maryland. The university mascot is the Terrapin,
hence the abbreviation – Terp.

Anyway, Dr Steven Rattner, a deaf dentist, with a
huge clientele in the Washington, DC area, was
profiled in the magazine. He graduated from
University of Maryland in 1977.

It is a rarity that a deaf person would be profiled
in a hearing college magazine.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Deaf travelers in Europe should no longer have problems
crossing borders next year. All they need is an identification card.

Agreement regarding a single identification card was thrashed out
among leaders in the European disabled community. One such leader
is Deaf European parliamentarian Adam Kosa of Hungary.

note:
This has changed, maybe a bit, because of Brexit
restricting travel to and away from Great
Britain. Time will tell.

Starbucks just happened to have a hearing

say what would have happened if no one knew

matter of a case by case basis (or rather
drive-in by drive-in basis).

ORDERING CHINESE DUMPLINGS
A deaf person ordered Chinese dumplings
at a restaurant.

The dumplings were served by the waiter,
who immediately left the table.

A group of hearing people at the next
table ordered the same thing. The
waiter served these dumplings and
pointed his finger to each dumpling,
explaining what it is – pork dumpling,
chicken dumpling, cheese dumpling,
beef dumpling, etc.

The waiter did not want to explain
to the deaf person.

PAGING ACROSS THE CAFE TABLE?
There was a newspaper story about a cafe in HCM City in
Vietnam that is popular with deaf people.
These deaf people communicate with each other while

They do not communicate with each other by sign
language. They communicate with each other with their
own cell phone pagers!
Why?

AMERICAN AND BRITISH NEWSPAPERS
DeafDigest editor looks for deaf news in newspapers
every day. There have been many, many, many deaf news
in British newspapers, but few deaf news in USA
newspapers.
Why? Is it because British newspapers like to write
about the deaf while American newspapers don’t?
No. More and more American newspapers go out of
business; many American newspaper reporters are
laid off. As a result, fewer and fewer American deaf
stories.
British newspapers are different.

This week’s ASL video in youtube:
http://deafdigest.com/videos/newspapers/

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

In reading through captioning errors, it might help to look at long and
short vowels. The only vowel keys on the steno keyboard are A, O, E, and
U. The E and U are depressed together to get the letter I. These are
generally thought to be the short vowels.

In order to get a long vowel sound, there are a couple of different
methods that captioners use. The most common way to get long vowels is by
adding other vowels to go with those vowels.

For example, the short A sound would just be written with the letter A.
However, the long A sound may be written with the letters AEU. If the
captioner makes a mistake in writing a long or a short vowel, it can
change the word.

Some examples of this would be:
He used many colors of pants on the project.
She backed the pies.
They ate stacks and baked potatoes.

These should be:
He used many colors of paints on the project.
She baked the pies.
They ate steaks and baked potatoes.

A DEAF BANQUET IN YEAR 1943
In 1943, a deaf organization hosted a banquet for

vibrations are impossible.
