Top stories about the deaf:

Employers are avoiding the application
box asking if the applicant is deaf
or disabled. Not in USA, but it was a
big newspaper story in Australia.

………..

Abigail Heringer, the popular deaf contestant
on The Bachelor, did not make the cut,
much to the disappointment of her fans.

……….

British astronaut Tim Peake, who works with
the European Space Agency, said that those
wanting to become astronauts must have
hearing loss of 25 dB or less. In his
viewpoint – deaf astronauts? No!

…………….

A sad situation in the hospital. Interpreter
was not available in Yorkshire, England –
and so, the Coda daughter had to tell her deaf
father that he was dying! The deaf wife
was there to see it all.

………………

Not all European truck drivers know English
(outside of Great Britain). For that reason
there is “Brexit Sign Language” used by
British military troops to communicate
with these truck drivers when they cross
the border both ways.

DISAGREEMENT WITH A SCHOOL DISTRICT
Many parents of deaf children have disagreements
with the school district.
An example would be that the parents want to send the
deaf child to a residential school but the district
wants the deaf child to go to a mainstreamed program.
If you live in Virginia, you may be lucky. The
state Department of Education has mediation services.
The parent and the district can go to mediation
and hopefully solve this disagreement issue.
Does your home state have it? Maybe you may need
to find out.

Top stories about the deaf:

A deaf customer was not allowed to enter a store
because she was wearing the wrong kind of mask –
a see through mask instead of a regular mask!
This incident was posted on a tweet.

……….

A dispute is going on between the public schools
and New Mexico School for the Deaf concerning
funding of deaf students. Legislators on
both sides of this issue feel trapped.

……….

The “cancel” culture is on us. Do something
wrong and angry people will demand that
the culture behind the issue be cancelled out.
A music critic said that Ancient Greek, Latin,
Italian, French or German be cancelled out
when trying to learn classic music. Sign
Language? This critic said it should be
saved, not cancelled!

……….

Facebook has shut down the news media
in Australia because of an ongoing
dispute over content rights. As a result
the deaf community have been cut off from
access to sign language news.

……….

All languages are right languages. In that
category is the Black American Sign Language.
There is a movement to push this sign language
into the mainstream.

DEAF LOST IN FRANCE; HEARING LOST IN FRANCE
Learning the bus system, the metro subway system, the railroad
system in France can be a big challenge.
Which is better – to be deaf in France and to depend on eyes to
follow directions, or to be hearing in France and to depend on
ears to follow directions?
No difference. Hearing people get lost in France; same as with the

A FUSSY DEAF UNIVERSITY STUDENT IN PARIS
At the deaf school in Paris, the administrator told DeafDigest
editor a story.
They are proud of one of their graduates, who is attending a big
university in France. But that student is fussy.
He refuses French Sign Language interpreters. He also refuses CART
services.
What does he prefer? A notetaker that goes with him to every class

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

As we have been looking at vowels and vowel sounds, we have seen that most
stenocaptioners write the “ow” sound with the steno OU, and they write the
“oy” sound with the steno OEU.

Fingering mistakes can happen, and captioners can either miss a letter or
add one when it shouldn’t be there. If they do, they can get a totally
different word than they meant to write.

Some examples of this would be:
He dried off with a large beach toil.
She did not want the water in the pot to bowel over.
The politician was being cow about his intentions.

These should be:
He dried off with a large beach towel.
She did not want the water in the pot to boil over.
The politician was being coy about his intentions.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Martha Harris, not deaf, had been serving on the
board of Ohio School for the Deaf for two years,
and had two years to go on a 4-year term. She came
to the next board meeting only to be told she was
no longer on the board. As a result, she has filed
a lawsuit. The state said her seat was “open”
because the past governor did not fill out the
necessary paperwork for the Ohio Senate Clerk
to have it confirmed! And while she was attending
meetings for two years, she was considered to be
an unofficial member. But no one told her that.

Top stories about the deaf:

A TV historian said, in an interview, that
he remembers very well the deaf actress
(Linda Bove) that played as Allison
in the 1980 episode of Happy Days. Reason
was that the Fonz chose to learn signs
to try to communicate with her rather
than to urge her how to speak. The
irony is that she dumped the Fonz in
favor of another hearing person who
already learned ASL for her.

………..

There is a twist in the Nike lawsuit
settlement by a deaf litigant. As part
of the settlement, Nike is paying the
ligitant an amount of money as service
award because of nearly 20 hours she spent
in preparing the lawsuit.

……….

When Wawa ASL-sang the national anthem
at the Super Bowl, he had one fear – that
the audience would sleep on him. Instead,
he won praises for his rendition!

…………….

A newspaper said:

Court reporting might be the best job you’ve never
considered

This was in reference to recruiting interested
candidates for the captioning field.

………………

Spain has approved see-through face masks
to accommodate the deaf.

DISABILITY STUDIES VERSUS DEAF STUDIES
Disability Studies is a becoming a popular choice of
major at more and more colleges.
It will be interesting to observe the trend of
Deaf Studies with Disability Studies at these colleges.
Will Deaf Studies be absorbed as part of Disability
Studies? Or would both Studies co-exist as two
separate majors?
This would be interesting to see how things play out
within the next five years.

VERY DEAF PERSON IN DEAF WORLD OR IN HEARING WORLD
There are many “very deaf” people that function
in Deaf World. There are also many “very deaf”
people that function in the hearing world.
Why? Many reasons such as marrying a hearing
spouse, living in a small town,  rejecting Deaf
Culture, parental choice in placing deaf with
hearing people, etc, etc.
There is also another possible reason. Some
oral schools for the deaf would transfer some
very deaf, but very functioning, deaf child
to hearing schools. They feel these deaf children
are better off in the hearing world.
Were these oral schools right? Hard to tell.

Top stories about the deaf:

A hearing actress, in a past DeafWest play, said in
a newspaper interview that working with a deaf actor
meant one thing – they both have to depend on each
other on the stage with their lines!

……….

There are already complains that the Clubhouse, another
communications app, is totally useless for the deaf.

……….

A new group, Writers on Zoom, has announced an
online conference for writers on how to improve
their writing craft. It said that writers that
want to write about the deaf are welcome to join.
What is troubling is that the announcement said
nothing about sign language or captions to accommodate
interested deaf participants!

……….

Edison’s deafness has been well known over
the years, but what is the extent of his
hearing loss? A historian said he eventually
became deaf in one ear and partially deaf
in the other ear.

……….

A sad scene – a non-signing Coda had to
bring a white board to communicate with
a deaf mother, living at assisted living
facility – had to be apart from each
other due to social distancing rules.

Many people visit Gallaudet University.

What is one of the most popular places for visitors
on the campus?

It is the old Gallaudet swimming pool on the first
floor of the Ole Jim (Alumni House).

Gallaudet shut down the swimming pool during the
fifties. but it was never torn down.

One can see a small part of the pool through thick
glass. It is located in the Ole Jim meeting room.

If the door is closed, you have to wait till the meeting

GIVING FREE HEARING AIDS
Derrick Coleman, the past Super Bowl football player, who
is deaf, gave free hearing aids to several deaf students.
DeafDigest hopes these deaf students will use the
hearing aids.
Many years ago, a famous baseball player came to a

What did that student do? Put the hearing aid in

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

As we have been looking at how stenocaptioners write vowels, we have seen
that many captioners use the steno AO for the “oo” sound or spelling, AOE
for the long “e” sound, AOU for the long “u” sound, and AOEU for the long
“i” sound.

Because these letters are all depressed at the same time, like chords on a
piano, there is a chance that a captioner could miss one of the keys or
accidentally depress an extra key, and then an error would occur.

Some examples of this would be:
This game was presented by the National Feeble League.
He received fry tickets for the event.
She said she didn’t fool good today.

These should be:
This game was presented by the National Football League.
He received free tickets for the event.

people about possible budget cuts. Such funding

SIGN LANGUAGE AT THE AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGE
For many years, the brokers at the American Stock
Exchange used special sign language to communicate
buy and sell orders with each other. Sign language
is no longer used because of computers.
Many years ago, two Coda brokers worked at the
American Stock Exchange. One day they used ASL to
chat with each other on the trading floor for a
few minutes.
The American Stock Exchange managers were upset
about it, and these two Coda brokers were told
never again to use ASL on the trading floor.
These managers were afraid that other brokers
would think the Codas were using ASL as a code to
hide their buy and sell instructions!
American Stock Exchange is no more. It was
purchased by New York Stock Exchange and the
name was changed.
