This week’s ASL video in youtube

A SCARY INCIDENT
A deaf person lived with his hearing family members
in a house.
One morning, a stranger knocked on the door. A
hearing family member yelled “please open the door and
come in.”
The deaf person did not know that a family member
was yelling – and was surprised to see a stranger
come into the house.
Thinking the hearing person came in uninvited,
the deaf person threw him out of the house.
It was not realized until few hours later that
there was a big deaf-hearing misunderstanding.

HEARING PERSON ANGRY OR NOT ANGRY?
A hearing person, listening to someone’s voice, will know
if the other hearing person is angry or not.
When a hearing person talks “rough” the deaf person may think
the hearing person is angry. Not always, there are many hearing
people that talk rough but are not really angry!
Often very hard to tell.

DEAF IN DANGEROUS JOBS
Many jobs in the world are dangerous. Carelessness
on these jobs can kill these people.
Do we have deaf people in dangerous jobs? Yes.
We have had deaf cops, deaf people in the military,
a deaf spy, a deaf movie stuntsperson, deaf firemen,
deaf professional football player, a deaf car racer,
a deaf cowboy in rodeos, etc, etc.
If you feel we have no deaf people in dangerous

WRONG SPY
This is a true story. During World War I years, a deaf
person wanted to use the telephone to communicate with
a hearing person.
He tapped on the telephone receiver with a pencil.
The hearing person would listen to the number of taps
to know what he is saying in a coded language.
The federal agents thought the deaf person was a
World War I spy and they arrested him. They realized
it was just a telephone communication between the
deaf and the hearing, and they let him go free.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

After obtaining the entry-level certification of the Registered
Professional Reporter (RPR), a court reporter may then be eligible to take
the Registered Merit Reporter (RMR) examination.

According to the National Court Reporters Association, “a merit-level
reporter is one who demonstrates the knowledge, skill, and ability to
report complex, technical proceedings; produces timely verbatim
transcripts using state-of-the-art technology; keeps abreast of all
reporter-related terminology and technologies; and has a working knowledge
of basic reporter-related management techniques.”

The RMR examination includes a skills portion consisting of a dictation
test at speeds higher than the RPR examination. The RMR candidates are
tested on literary matter at 200 words per minute, jury charge at 240
words per minute, and testimony at 260 words per minute. The reporter must
obtain a 95% accuracy rate on each of the three parts in order to pass.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

It was mentioned in DeafDigest a while ago that a State Peter
is robbing a State Paul over cash reserves. This refers to the
Alabama Dual Party Relay Board being upset over the state
trying to take the money away from them to pay for state
educational needs. This squabble has led to a lawsuit filed
this week. At stake is an ever-growing pot of 15 cents paid
per month by each landline customer, originally earmarked for
the state relay service needs. It is a cash cow of approximately
30 million dollars that the state has its eyes on!

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Do not trivialize Gallaudet University. This is what Gallaudet
students are saying. This is in reference to the efforts of the
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to change the
name of the metro stop from New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U
to New York Ave-NoMa with Gallaudet as a subtitle. The
students are requesting that the station be named NoMa-Gallaudet U.

THESE DEAF-WARNING TRAFFIC SIGNS
Many of us see these “Deaf Child” signs while
driving our cars.
Are there really deaf children around? In one
Maryland neighborhood, a “Deaf Child” sign was
posted when the deaf child was about 3 or 4 years
old. That was about 30 years ago.
This sign is still there even though the
“deaf child” grew up to become an adult, graduated
from Gallaudet, got married and moved out to a

A PERFECT SPEECH TRICK
Many deaf people cannot speak well. But many
hearing people think some of these deaf people can speak very well.
There is a trick. Some words are difficult to be pronounced; some
words are easily pronounced. The smart deaf person would communicate
with the hearing by only using words that are easy to pronounce,
and by avoiding hard to pronounce words.
Growing up in New York, DeafDigest editor graduated from Charles Evans
Hughes High School. It was hard to pronounce the high school name.
Luckily, the high school changed its name from Textile HS to Charles
Evans Hughes High School.
Many people knew about the old Textile HS, and it was much easier
to pronounce Textile than to pronounce Charles Evans Hughes.
This is the pronunciation trick that fooled hearing people.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

The entry-level certification for court reporters is the Registered
Professional Reporter (RPR). An RPR possesses the knowledge, skills, and
ability to produce a verbatim record of proceedings and basic knowledge of
reporter-related terminology and technology.

The nationally recognized RPR examination includes a three-part skills
test and a Written Knowledge Test (WKT). The skills portion of the exam is
a dictation test of literary matter at 180 words per minute, jury charge
at 200 words per minute, and testimony at 225 words per minute. The
reporter must obtain a 95% accuracy rate in each of these three parts in
order to pass.

The WKT portion additionally tests those areas of knowledge needed to
perform the duties of a court reporter, such as reporting procedures,
transcript production, operating practices, and professional issues and

taken to create awareness of the Irish Sign Language.
It is being shown at the Signs of Life showing at the

Top stories about the deaf:

Hard to believe is this newspaper
headline in India:

World Deaf and Dumb Day

Another newspaper did things right
by saying:

World Deaf Day

…………..

We have many different sign languages all over
the world. What sign language is considered to be
the newest?

Not quite that new as it was set up during the
eighties is the Nicaraguan Sign Language.
It was explained in a newspaper story. Prior
to the eighties, the deaf communicated via
body language with gestures as opposed to a
more formal sign language!

……….

Hey, Alexa, why next year?

DeafDigest editor is asking that question
with respect to Alexa announcement that
their new version will be deaf-friendly?

Their announcement said 2022. Why not
now – in 2021? It said the new Alexa
will trigger nearby flashing signalers.

The catch is that it must be set up
and programmed the right way. Can we
do the trick?

……………….

The West Virginia state superintendent of
Education and the State Board of Education
is taking control of West Virginia School
for the Deaf – and making drastic changes.

For good or for bad? Unfortunately, bad!

……………:….

“police departments implement training programs to
educate their officers only after a tragedy happens”

this was the comment made by an angry advocate
in a newspaper interview

CHEAP OR EXPENSIVE
Many states are broke; many school systems are
broke.
They have a hard time deciding – to hire cheap
interpreters or expensive interpreters. Also, to
hire cheap CART operators or expensive CART
operators.
A cheap interpreter and a cheap CART operator
may show low quality with many mistakes. An
expensive interpreter and an expensive CART
operator will show best quality with very
few errors.
What is the best choice? It is hard to
decide, but DeafDigest prefers expensive
interpreters and expensive CART operators
because of less errors.

A BIG DEAF HAIRSTON CONFUSION

There are two deaf people with the same Hairston
name. The first one is Eugene Hairston, who was one
of the world’s best boxers in the late forties.
The second one is Ernest Hairston, whom for many
years, was the chief of the Captioned Films and Media
Services in US Department of Education. Both of them
are not related to each other.
Both are black – and there is so much confusion.
Some people thought Ernest was a boxer. Some people
thought Eugene worked with Captioned Films.
DeafDigest editor often had to make clarifications
when some deaf people confused both men!
