DeafDigest editor, himself a graduate from a deaf oral
school, had a long chat with a friend, himself a graduate
of another deaf oral school.
What did they talk about? Laughing and crying over
these “horrible” days at oral schools. Examples were
teachers hitting signing students’ hands with rulers;
punishing signers by not letting them go on field trips;
forcing them to lipread hearing speakers at school
events; forced to give oral speeches at school events;
etc, etc.
Many of us laugh over our past oral days, but some
still cry over these days. Very sad.
