He was not deaf but was the director of Fairfax, VA Disability Services Planning and Development which oversaw the rights and the needs of the disabled, the deaf included, in the county. DeafDigest also dedicates this edition to Jean-Robert Gauthier, past Liberal senator and Ottawa-Vanier member of Parliament (Canada) who departed us. Also, not deaf, he fought for the rights and the needs of the disabled, the deaf included in the Ontario province. DeafDigest also dedicates this edition to Frank Bryan, a career educator and administrator in schools for the deaf, who departed us. Said an associate: I remember him as a quiet man, but one who was dedicated to doing a good job. I found him to be knowledgeable about, and dedicated to, quality education for deaf students. He dedicated his life to our profession and I think he, at least, deserves to be remembered - Very Hot News The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf has selected male swimmer/cyclist Terence Parkin, South Africa and female swimmer Aksana Petrushenka, Belarus as deaf athletes of the year - Sunday December 13th In Virginia, stimulus funds have helped the state Department of Rehabilitative Services reopen cases of the deaf and the disabled that have been on the waiting list, and thusly unable to receive rehabilitation assistance and counsel. - Monday December 14th Gallaudet's upcoming president has formed a cabinet, consisting of himself and 11 other vital members of the Gallaudet community. They will work together as a team on campus matters and issues. - Tuesday December 15th Cochlear implant people are upset in Australia. They are saying that the government would give them free cochlear implants 10-15 years ago but would not give them free replacements. Tantamount to getting a new car 10-15 years ago but not getting newer replacement cars! - Wednesday December 16th Tired of empty promises but with little action, the World Wide Web Consortium is pushing hard in all directions, and eliciting promises from Intel, Gap Inc, Yahoo, Apple, Target and others to make the web more accessible to the disabled. For the deaf, it means captions. (Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition) .. Deaf Miscellaneous stuff: The off-Broadway production of "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" has closed. WHY DEAF SOCIAL CLUBS SUFFER? Deaf clubs are suffering. Why? There are 5 reasons: - much disagreement among members - no volunteers - older and younger members are apart - deaf people stay home because of video chats - ASL and oral members are apart Very sad. - for ASL News version, please click on: http://deafdigest.com/videos/clubssuffering/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) NO RESTAURANT SPECIALS Many restaurants offer specials, which offer better meals at better prices. Many of these specials are not on the menu; the waiter just announces these specials from his memory. And these same waiters are too lazy to write down on paper what the specials are if the dining group is deaf. Discrimination? Yes. - for ASL News version, please click on: http://deafdigest.com/videos/restaurantspecials/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) ................................................................ These fans could be real nasty when they see something they don't like on the baseball field. Tyson Gillies was obtained by the Phillies in a trade this week. It is not just that the name Gillies may rhyme with Phillies, but that he is deaf! And it may be a blessing for a deaf ball player not to hear the cruel taunts from the fans in the stands. TO SEEK ADVICE There was a newspaper story of a young mother that realized that her daughter was deaf. Since the town was Staunton, Virginia, she went to Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind to ask for advice. Suppose it was a big city, she would probably turn to an agency serving the deaf. Suppose it was a tiny town, a distance from a school for the deaf or from an agency serving the deaf, then to whom the mother may turn to? She may do a web search for agencies and schools serving the deaf. Or she may turn to a one-person resource center of deafness. There was one in a small town; the mother, confronted with her two deaf children, became her own resource center - giving advice to other parents of deaf children. Nothing wrong with it? Possibly - except that the mother opposed sign language, and steered all hopeful mothers towards the oral teaching methods. One of the mother's two deaf children later learned and is using ASL, "breaking" the mother's heart! A JUDO FAMILY IN RIVERSIDE There is a family in Riverside, California that are heavily into Judo and they're all deaf. Father Satoshi Nakama is a nationally certified coach with the US Judo Federation and is a third degree black belt. Youngest son Hiroshi, while attending California School for the Deaf at Riverside, is a 13 year old 7th grader, competing against 16-17 year old kids, and finishing high in junior nationals. Oldest son Ryoshi, a mainstreamed program freshman, is also competitive in the various judo tournaments that he took part in. Mother Sharon is not deaf, but works in special education in the county. She said her sons' deafness have not stopped them in learning judo and the techniques needed to be successful. A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK Q. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? quoted exactly as is by an interpreter: I hate when I'm interpreting at a mostly-hearing gathering (committee meeting, etc.), and everything the Deaf consumer says (voiced by the interpreter) seems to fall into a black hole... i.e., it is not treated as participation in the discussion, there is no acknowledgement or response from any of the others -- instead, it seems the others regard it as the Deaf person and I carrying on our own separate conversation.
