– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

A Deaf House ( )
and now this – A Deaf City! DeafDigest is not
talking about a city where a high number of
deaf people live, but about cities that are
deaf-friendly. The Atlantic Cities ran a piece
title – Designing a City for the Deaf. It focuses
on sidewalks, public benches, sight lines, light fixtures (hint – darkened restaurants are
not deaf-friendly!), etc, etc. Gallaudet and
NTID were both mentioned as perfect examples
of being friendly enough to its deaf students.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority, an agency
that oversees attorneys in Great Britain, is
saying that deaf people are not able to access
the legal services that they need. To correct
it, this agency is writing up guidelines for
attorneys to follow.

– Very Hot News

Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness can go ahead
with its captioning lawsuit against CNN, the
Oakland United States Magistrate judge Lauren Beeler
said so. CNN had hoped to get out of it by claiming
that the First Amendment protects their rights
not to caption. The judge wouldn’t buy that
argument. GLAD’s lawsuit is on the premise that
CNN is violating the civil rights of Deaf
Californians. Shockwaves are already being felt
among other news providers – if CNN loses,
these news providers will be forced to caption their news. Some currently do, some currently don’t

Newly minted New Zealand deaf MP Mojo Mathers
got her first petition from the Deaf Community.
It asked for increased funding for CI!

– Friday March 30th

A group of students is persuading San Diego State University
not to cancel the university ASL and Deaf Studies programs.
These programs have already been suspended and it may be up
to the faculty senate to make the final decision.

– Saturday March 31st

Deaf people visiting the Olympics at London may be
greeted by city ambassadors fluent in Japanese
Sign Language, German Sign Language, Norwegian
Sign Language and British Sign Language.  ASL?
Nope! Why? Do not know!


Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

A research team from University of Montreal is saying that
it is not always true that deaf people’s vision is
superior to those of hearing people. They are saying
that some deaf people have serious visual problems.
This finding was published in the journal Neuroreport.

33rd World’s Largest Silent Weekend / Interpreter Conference
June 28-July 1, 2012 in Orlando, Florida — 190 hours of classes
for interpreters, ASL & ITP teachers and students with 3.5 CEUs
available for interpreters.

The Florida Hotel offers free parking and free in-room internet and
resort fee waived. Next to the conference is an enormous food court offering
you complete meals for as little as $5.99.

Thursday pre-conference opening session is “Interpreter Guild” by
Paula Browning. There will also be four separate entertainment venues
concluding with a 4-hour post-conference session on Sunday along with
language-focused and interpreting-focused classes. Classes include
6-hour tracks on Islam and Judaism plus an 8-hour track on Medical
Interpreting by a Deaf physician.

Low branches!

We blind and vision impaired folks don’t see all those low branches while walking.

Our white canes do a good job “feeling” the way in front of us on the sidewalks.

They are not very helpful for over hanging objects!

Protection is needed for our eyes and forehead!

Orientation and mobility instructors recommend that we wear a cap or visor as well as sunglasses.

Low hanging branches will hit the visor instead of scratching our forehead!

Sunglasses or glasses will protect our eyes.

So much for out California tans!

We will be the folks out there with the white foreheads!

medical, vocational and other services. Qualifications: BA/BS degree

The Center for Disability Rights (CDR) is looking for a dynamic individual to manage the deaf services programs for CDR. The person in this role will provide oversight to the Deaf Communication Specialist Programs, Day and Res Hab, and SSP programs of CDR.

Job duties include scheduling, program development, training, and overall oversight of day-to-day coordination of the habitation services, SSP services,  Deaf Communication Specialist Services, and staff supervision.

–    Must be ASL  fluent –    Understanding of OPWDD regulations pertaining to the Habilitation Programs
–    Be able to develop and implement systems that ensure the highest quality of service and compliance with regulations and OPWDD standards for service delivery.
–    Must have reliable mode of transportation.
–    Must be organized, detailed and flexible.
–    One year of supervisory experience –    Must have at least a Bachelor’s degree in a human service field.
