A federal judge may approve a class action lawsuit
settlement that would force Pennsylvania to
provide services for the deaf in need of assistance
in the human services system announced plans to improve communications
with deaf customers. This company deals with customers’
bill paying matters and issues. They have realized that
communication needs of the deaf is different from hearing.
As a result they will expand into different ways a deaf
customer can discuss with the customer service department.
One option is on-line chat.

The name of a town is Townsville. It is not a joke.
It is a real town in Australia, on the Outback. It is
one of the Outback’s biggest cities. Anyway, for the
benefit of the deaf, all of the town’s service agencies
have agreed to move into one building – as a one-stop
visit for deaf people that need help and advice.

The National Guild of Hypnotists, Inc is said to be the
world’s largest organization of hypnotists.
It was founded in 1950 by Dr, Rexford L North. He was
described as “stone deaf.”
Despite his deafness he was said to be a publisher, author,
teacher, therapist, showman and entrepreneur. And for sure,
he was not culturally deaf!

Doctor visit

The other day I needed an urgent care appointment to see a doctor.

Last minute, finding an interpreter is impossible.

Writing with a black marker and paper was not effective.

I brought my iPad with keyboard.  I used the App “note”.

I set the font size I needed and reversed the background color.

That was very effective!

However, the nurse needed to enhance her typing skills.  She was “hen pecking”!

Year 1979 – a book “Identity Crisis in Deafness” was written
by B. M. Schowe, a career labor economist with Firestone Tire
in Akron, Ohio. He did not major in Economics after graduating
from Gallaudet in 1918 – but via luck and design Firestone offered
him the job as the company Labor Economist. And because he was
deaf he was also the unofficial Firestone Deaf Employees human resources person. His outspoken comments on anything relating to the deaf and of deafness sort of made him a pariah among the
professionals that worked with the deaf! Only one deaf professional
did not consider him a pariah, but a close associate – NAD executive
director Frederick C. Schreiber! When Schreiber ran into problems
and issues with the NAD, he ran to Schowe for advice and counsel.

Position Description:
This position is a full-time American Sign Language (ASL) clinical instructor at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, ASL Studies Program. This person will demonstrate leadership and creativity by contributing vision for program management and professional development in ASL Studies Program.   The individual will be an active and collaborative member of the ASL Studies Program team.  One aspect that individual will work independently and demonstrate self-reliance and self-initiative; while supporting University and department’s mission and values to the students, the larger community, and stakeholders.

This position also includes teaching in various aspects of ASL and/or related courses.   Additionally, this individual will provide pedagogical leadership in post-secondary language courses, curriculum development, including the exam materials, syllabus, and rubrics, in compliance of UWM and ASL Studies Program.   Other duties include recruiting, teaching, and mentoring individuals with diverse educational, language, and cultural backgrounds.

The applicants must have a master’s degree from an accredited university in a closely related field.  Applicants should possess strong and effective leadership skills in teaching methods in various aspects of ASL or related courses.  Evidence of a minimum of 3-years of full-time collegiate/university teaching experience (or equivalent) in ASL. Native/near native fluency in ASL.    This individual has demonstrated the knowledge of ASL and Deaf Studies related field which may include but is not limited to linguistic principles of ASL, Deaf Culture, and Deaf History.

Preferred Qualifications:
Overall satisfactory performance in teaching, service, and scholarly activities.  Evidence of positive relationships and collegiality with university students, staff, and colleagues.  Preference is given toward applicants with ability to develop trainings and workshops for current ASL instructors, university students, and extended to the community outside of the University.   Evidence of participation in ASL/Deaf studies and Deaf community organizations on local, state, and/or national levels. Candidates with ASLTA certification and ASL proficiency (ASLPI) Level 4 or greater is an ideal.

The Client Support Specialist will provide services including, but not limited to, community education, information & referral and peer counseling in addition to meeting the specific needs of the hard of hearing and late deafened community.

RESPONSIBILITIES: To teach undergraduate courses in the Deaf Education
program and maintain office hours, participate in the following:
recruiting, advising majors, supervising candidates during practicum
and/or Professional Trimester, serving on Resident teacher committees, and
serving on university committees. A successful candidate with a doctorate
will be hired as tenure-track.

QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED: Masters Degree in deaf education or related
field. Teacher Certification. Proficiency in American Sign Language.
Council on Education of the Deaf Certification. Teaching experience in a
school for the deaf and/or public school classes for the deaf. PREFERRED:
Earned Doctorate in deaf education or related field. Teaching experience
in a university deaf education teacher preparation program. Ability and
willingness to team teach in USAO.s interdisciplinary liberal arts core

Typical duties include determining eligibility for rehabilitation services and supporting individuals with disabilities in a vocational program leading to an employment outcome.  Strong interpersonal and organizational skills are necessary.  These positions may serve persons with a broad range of disabilities and ages, including transition services from school to work, mental health rehabilitation, and rehabilitation counseling for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These are two year time limited positions.  One position will be based in the Lewiston Career Center, and the other position will be based in the Bangor Career Center. Occasional statewide travel will be required. Please state preference of location on your application.

Minimum qualifications: A six (6) year combination of training, experience, and or education providing knowledge and abilities relating to vocational rehabilitation placement.
After meeting the above minimum qualifications, preference will be given to applicants with a Bachelors Degree and two years of experience in rehabilitation counseling. Additional preference will be given to those applicants having a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling, related field or a C.R.C.

A necessary special requirement for this position is proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).

12. Provide effective staff development activities in the area of deaf education that incorporate the mission of the district, program evaluation outcomes, and input from teachers and others.

13. Implement the policies established by federal and state law, state board of education rule, and local board policy in curriculum and instruction area pertaining to deaf education.
