– 10th anniversary of The Old Fogeys

THE OLD FOGEYS made its online premiere on DEAF DIGEST on June 16, 2002.
They first appeared in print as a comic book in early 2002 which caught the
attention of DEAF DIGEST editor Barry Strassler who suggested wider
distribution through DEAF DIGEST.

THE OLD FOGEYS celebrates its 10th anniversary on June 17, 2012. Creator
David H. Pierce thanks his fans and supporters of the strip. Without them,
there would be no strip.

– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Do American broadcasters (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox) work
together to help the deaf with captions? Not really.
But it is different in New Zealand. These broadcasters – NZ On Air, TVNZ and South Pacific Pictures
are cooperating with each other to help set up
more captions on DVDs! Who pays for the captions?
The NZ On Air does.

Tamer Bahaa, a deaf Egyptian, grew up orally in
school, knowing no sign language. People though
he was not too bright a person. As he got older
he learned signs and liked it so much that he
set out to teach it to other deaf people. For some reason the Egyptian government did not
like the idea and tried to stop him. He went
ahead with this project by getting proper papers
and government permits. He is pushing to get
sign language in the courts and in the hospitals
for deaf people that need it.

While deaf people in Canada are grumbling about
lack of video relay services, there is a video
relay interpreter service, at least in Windsor,
Canada (across the river from Detroit). The
Windsor Police Department will be using the
VRI to help improve communications with deaf
residents. Providing this VRI service is
not a Canadian company, but an American

Not just Windsor (see above) but it is Calgary
Police that is looking into implement cellphone
emergency paging service. The police is getting
feedback from the community.

– Friday June 15th

The deaf helping the blind? Sort of – in this
story – at the Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive
Technology Society of North America 2012 Annual Conference, there was a design contest. Cal Lutheran University entering the contest were graduate
students in the university’s deaf/hard of hearing
program. They came up with a special clip attached
to the cane that the blind people use. The clip
prevents the cane from toppling over when the
blind person is not using it. This design has
propelled the team into the contest semi finals.
DeafDigest is not sure if the students were deaf
or are hearing graduate students majoring in Deaf

– Saturday June 16th

Malcolm Bruce, not deaf, is the MP serving the Gordon area
of Scotland. He has been knighted by Great Britain, honoring
his services on behalf of the deaf. He is the father of a
deaf daughter.

He said:
I’ve campaigned on behalf of deaf people ever since. It seemed the right thing to do. I’m also trying to get more MPs involved. I’ve been an MP here since 1983, so I do owe a lot of this to the constituents


Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

When President Obama allowed undocumented immigrants to stay in
USA, he gave hope to Alan Verdugo, who is deaf. He just graduated
from high school, and had hopes of either attending college
or becoming an automotive technician. As an undocumented immigrant,
he thought his life would be hopeless if sent back to Mexico. He
has been living in the Phoenix area since he was a child.

A deaf man from Canada told DeafDigest editor of a
gesture frustration with a hearing friend.
He told the hearing friend that he was going to play
He used the gesture for a hockey stick. The hearing
person thought he said “fishing”. No. Thought it
was “baseball”. No. Thought it was “golf”. No. Thought
it was “tennis.”
The deaf person walked away, frustrated.

Every deaf person hates this word “deaf-mute” or
even “deaf-and-dumb”.
Many hearing people, even hearing friends, often
use that word “deaf-mute” when pointing their
finger at the deaf person.
Most times deaf person does not see it, but
sometimes from the corner of his eye, he catches
the word “deaf-mute.”
DeafDigest editor has caught that word many times
for many years. Not worth the time to argue and fight.
He just smiles and walks away.

When a deaf baby is born in a hearing household, the hearing
parents feel immediate grief.
Their #1 question is:

Will my child be able to hear some day?

Appointments are made with hearing aid specialists, with
CI surgeons, with ENT surgeons, hoping that one of them will
immediately make a deaf child a hearing child!

DeafDigest editor, years ago, was employed at the
Deaf Counseling, Advocacy and Referral Agency, located
at San Leandro, CA but serving the Bay Area widespread
Deaf Community.
He realized that the state of California was unique
in that there are eight regions, each served by an area
deaf service agency.
These Big 8 agencies are:

– Orange County Deaf Equal Access Foundation
– Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness, Inc

Is this set-up unique among these 50 states?
Yes; every state has their own way of providing services

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. Is it great that many ASL students do not have to do
homework after class? It is different from taking classes
in Spanish – where one has to study the vocabulary and
grammatical rules. Right?

A. Depends on the teacher, possibly requiring ASL students
to mingle with the deaf in real life situations. ASL alone
in the classroom does not make a person ASL-fluent.

Going to the beach

I love going to the beach.  It can be by the ocean, a lake or near rivers.

Being vision impaired, walking barefoot is a safety concern.

Flip flops and sandals are okay but they don’t protect your toes!

One suggestion is to use water shoes.  They are available in many styles.

They protect our toes and feet from rocks and sharp objects.

Enjoy the summer!  Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Years 1840’s thru 1880’s – there were deaf prisoners in Irish
jails; they were accused of various crimes. This information
was gathered by Cormac Leonard, an Irish Sign Language
interpreter, and being shared with the deaf nowadays.


DeafNumbers of the Week:

Neurotologist Dr Howard Francis of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine said that 90 per cent of children born deaf were born to deaf parents in Trinidad and Tobago. This is
interesting – because the reverse is normally true – a huge
majority of deaf children are born to hearing parents in
USA and in many parts of the world.

DCARA has a full-time non-exempt job opening for the position of Client Supports Specialist at the DCARA  San Jose office.  This position provides a wide range of peer counseling, community education, workshops and advocacy on behalf of the diverse Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in the Santa Clara County area.  The position reports to the Director of Client Support Services.

–    Provide the following services:  peer counseling, advocacy, communication assistance, independent living skills, information & referral and community education.
–    Ensure completion of intake paperwork, Individual Services Plans, statistical information and monthly reports. –    Work with the Director of Client Support Services to develop linkages and working relationships with governmental and community-based organization/agencies in the city of San Jose and Santa Clara County that provide services to the Deaf community, as well as other agencies primarily serving deaf community.
–    Represents DCARA and/or the deaf community at meetings and community events.

Required Skills

Brief summary of duties:
This position works with customers on an outbound and inbound basis, helping them resolve any issues they may have related to using Purple products. This position works under minimal supervision.
Areas of Responsibility: Provides top level technical support for all inbound callers. Responsible for gathering data on both satisfied and dissatisfied customers and will work with other Purple teams to bring any customer issues to resolution. Uses technical skills and consultative style to demonstrate to potential customers how and why product/services suit the end user’s needs better than competitor’s products.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:
– Knowledge of PC and MAC operating systems and iOS and Android
– Video conferencing technical knowledge (i.e. h.323, SIP, h.263, h.264)
– Proficient with all videophones and mobile VRS application on the market
– Resolve complex network, router and firewall support
– 2 years of technical troubleshooting experience with emphasis on customer satisfaction
– Requires the ability to stay on track and meet daily production goals.
– Requires an energetic and outgoing person
– Must be friendly, empathetic, a good team player, quick thinker and be able to multi-task effectively
– Ability to communicate and interact with various customers via VideoPhone
– Good English skills and ASL fluency are required.
Physical Requirements Employees may experience the following physical demands for extended periods of time:
– Sitting, standing and walking (95-100%)
– Keyboarding (40-60%)
– Viewing computer monitor, videophone, and pager requiring close vision (40-60%)

The President will provide direction to the School and serve as its public face, leading advocate, and operational steward. Located in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, WRSD is a private school that was founded in 1967 by parents who wanted a day school option for their deaf children. With a model that allows students to learn at its Longmeadow Campus as well as in East Longmeadow public schools, WRSD is a pioneer in the mainstreaming of deaf students. Its simultaneous communication model – combining English-based sign language with spoken language – underscores the school’s prioritization of individual student needs above any particular approach or philosophy. WRSD continues to expand its offerings in order to be as responsive as possible to its student body. In addition to its campus-based programs, WRSD offers an array of audiological and educational services to students in 20 communities in Central and Western Massachusetts. With its educational partnership model, the School has become a national thought leader in deaf education and stands poised to take the next step in its evolution.

The President reports to the Board of Trustees and oversees a school that enrolls 63 students and reaches about 200 more through its outreach division. The 48-person WRSD staff includes four senior administrators, faculty, interpreters, audiologists, counselors, and speech therapists. The ideal candidate will have senior leadership experience at an institution with a focus on educating students with special needs. S/he should be experienced in reaching out to community leaders, policy makers, parents, and educational experts. S/he should have a passion for educating children and possess strong entrepreneurial instincts.
