Top stories about the deaf:
Deaf Can Coffee is a small chain of several
locations in Jamaica and is owned and operated
by two deaf partners. They wanted to add a
mobile coffee cafe – but ran into government
red tape. Some told them they needed license
to operate a mobile unit, while others told
them a license wasn’t necessary. This red
tape has slowed down the business growth.
It may be a lesson for greedy law firms, at least
in Canada. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice
ordered a law firm to donate $1.5 million in legal
fees to charity. This stems from the law firm’s
work regarding abuses at schools for the deaf
in Ontario. Yes, the law firm is appealing
the judge’s decision.
Is sign language called artificial language?
Yes, according to a lengthy article which said
that “artificial language” began in the 17th
century.
The legendary red brick house on the campus of
St Rita School for the Deaf, long abandoned
but used annually as Halloween’s Haunted
House, has been demolished.
Do hearing nurses understand the needs of
deaf patients? In an effort to help these
hearing nurses, the College at Brockport
(NY) had their nursing students play role
reversals, pretending to be deaf patients
themselves.

USA IS BAD PLACE FOR DEAF ATHLETES IN DEAFLYMPICS
We watched the hearing Winter Olympics on TV
last week. How do these Olympic athletes get
money for every day practices, lodging, meals
and for competition?  In many countries,
the government pay for their own Olympic
athletes. Not in USA.
For many hearing athletes they get corporate
money from big companies such as Nike, McDonald,
Bank of America, etc.
For American deaf athletes in Deaflympics,
they get zero dollars.
This is why USA is a bad place for deaf
athletes in Deaflympics.

COULD NOT ACCEPT DEAFNESS
DeafDigest editor knows of a Coda that works with the deaf
in a social service agency.
This Coda got married and had a deaf child. We would imagine
that if a Coda knows what deafness is all about because of his
parents and because he works with the deaf, he would easily
accept the deafness of his child.
Wrong! This Coda was very upset that his child was deaf.
Why?

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:
For us who are DeafBlind to read paper money is not easy these days.
The US Treasurer was sued by blind group for inaccessible money.
The court sided with the blind group and ordered the US to make money
accessible.
There have been a few changes in US paper money including bold large print
numbers.
Also a money reader is offered to blind individuals for free from the
Government.
In Canada, one of the corners of paper money has a Braille mark!
It was interesting to see the different options for accessibility for us
who are DeafBlind.
Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.
