– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Obama signed “thank you” to a deaf community
college student in Maryland. It practically
became front page news. This is puzzling.
It was not the first time Obama signed thanks
to a deaf person – and his previous thanks
went unreported in the newspapers. And
knowing the sign for the word thanks does not
mean Obama is ASL-fluent. Many waitresses,
upon serving a deaf patron, would run to another
waitress asking for the sign for thanks so that
she could use it when he pays the check. Many,
many waitresses use that sign in many Washington, DC restaurants, and possibly in Rochester, too. And besides, Michelle Obama knows more signs
than her husband!

History of chiropractics have credited D.D. Palmer
for being the world’s first chiropractor, and that
his first client was Harvey Lillard, a deaf man.
Lillard was able to hear again as a result of
Palmer’s work with the bones. Fact or fiction?
An article was posted on a web site, hinting that
it may have been a fiction. Was Cooperstown, the
site of the first baseball game? Same thing –
these fact or fiction debates!

There have always been complaints that the captioned
words on the screen do not match the program dialogue.
While many deaf viewers are not aware of it, it bothers
many hearing viewers. The AMC TV network has reached
agreement with a complainant and have promised to match
up captions with spoken words on future programs.

Deaf people are getting a raw deal from Great Britain’s
National Health Service. This is what Dr Andrew Alexander,
a consultant with the Royal United Hospital is saying.
He points out lack of interpreters as the reason.

The National Institute on Deafness and other Communications Disorders, which deals with the Pathological, Audiological, and Medical perspectives on deafness, has reaffirmed its goals and objectives for the years to come. These goals
run the gamut from CI’s to hearing aids, but also including research into areas of hearing loss that we

Is Deaf Shoulder tap an American Deaf Cultural
Deaf Americans are used to being tapped on the
shoulder – by hearing and deaf.
But what about deaf foreigners? Many years ago
DeafDigest editor was talking with a deaf foreigner
on a street.
A car was coming. DeafDigest editor tapped the
shoulder of the deaf foreigner to tell him to
move away from the car. Suddenly, without warning
that deaf foreigner almost was going to fight DeafDigest editor! He saw the car coming and
realized the tap was to tell him to move out.
Luckily no one was hurt but it was scary!

Last week, the NCAA Madness began, and there are always
upsets in the first round games (Duke is a perfect
University of Missouri also lost in a first round
game in another shocking upset.

1. Randolph College (VA) beat Gallaudet 71-42 in regular season

2. Norfolk State (VA) beat Randolph College 63-43 in regular season

3. Norfolk State (#15 seed) beat University of Missouri 86-84 (#2 seed)

Both Gallaudet and Randolph College play on the NCAA-III
level, which is not “big time” college basketball.
Norfolk State plays on the NCAA-I level but is not considered a basketball elite team (mid-level NCAA-I)
Deaf fans in Virginia that root for Norfolk State may not realize these close Gallaudet roots!
NCAA madness is not only for hearing; it is for deaf, too!

An administrator of a deaf school is retiring. This announcement
is no big deal in USA because we have many deaf administrators
in deaf schools. Not that so in Great Britain.
It was announced this week that British’s first deaf
headteacher, Mabel Davis, is retiring at the end of this summer
as the headmistress of Heathlands School.
Different nations. Different levels of achievement by the
deaf employed in schools for the deaf.

Quietly announced during the week through a few web sites
is an important change in the Chinese legal system.
Deaf individuals arrested in China shall be immediately
provided with legal assistance – and also to have the
suspects’ families informed.
Interestingly enough, not a single word was mentioned
re interpreters for the accused deaf. Perhaps interpreters
are provided, but without making a mention of this fact
in these press releases.

Terms of Employment:  The annual employment contract shall be based on the standard number of working days in the academic year (currently 210 days, August to June), beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. The Center for Disability Rights (CDR) is looking for a dynamic individual to manage the deaf services programs for CDR. The person in this role will provide oversight to the Deaf Communication Specialist Programs, Day and Res Hab, and SSP programs of CDR.

Job duties include scheduling, program development, training, and overall oversight of day-to-day coordination of the habitation services, SSP services,  Deaf Communication Specialist Services, and staff supervision.

–    Must be ASL  fluent –    Understanding of OPWDD regulations pertaining to the Habilitation Programs
–    Be able to develop and implement systems that ensure the highest quality of service and compliance with regulations and OPWDD standards for service delivery.
–    Must have reliable mode of transportation.
–    Must be organized, detailed and flexible.
–    One year of supervisory experience –    Must have at least a Bachelor’s degree in a human service field.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:    This position is an exempt, full-time, twelve-month position (on call, 24/7 during the school year)

The Director is responsible for all aspects of student programming at WPSD including the academic, residential, technology, library/media center and counseling/evaluation programs.
The Director supervises four Principals, the Dean of Students, Coordinator of Technology, Coordinator of Counseling/ Evaluation, Curriculum Coordinator, Mainstream Coordinator, IEP Coordinator, Reading Specialist, Coordinator of Children’s Services, and Registrar. Approximately 100 staff are within these programs.
The Director directs the development and revision of curriculum and works with other departments to assure coordination of curriculum sequence to ensure compliance with state regulations and to adhere to the standards of the School.
The Director is actively involved with the recruitment, enrollment and retention of students.   The Director meets and consults with parents, school districts, intermediate units and/or other agencies in order to develop/provide appropriate programs for students The Director reviews student progress and makes decisions regarding placement and educational planning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:    PA Instructional II certification in Deaf Education, PA Supervisory Certificate, M.Ed in Deaf Education or Educational Leadership.

Extensive knowledge of educational needs of deaf and hard-of- hearing children.  Extensive knowledge of special education regulations and standards including the IEP process.  Proven track record of managing and leading academic and residential programs for deaf and hard-of-hearing children.
Strong communication skills including the ability to maintain positive relations with parents, alumni and the local community
Sign language skills of applicants will be rated using the Sign Language     Proficiency Interview (SLPI); .Advanced. level skills are required at hire.
PA Act 24, PA 34 Criminal Background, Child Abuse, and FBI clearances required.  Valid driver license required.

SALARY Commensurate with other school superintendent-level positions
