Top stories about the deaf:
3D technology is a hot thing on the university
campuses. Gallaudet University was mentioned
in a magazine article about this topic.
Actor Robert Redford is playing Forrest Tucker,
a bank robber in a new movie. One of the
scenes shows him wearing a hearing aid.
Deaf? No, the hearing aid is a fake and
is a miniature police scanner!
Ghana requires hospitals to have interpreters.
Some hospitals do not have certified interpreters;
instead they have someone that are good with
gestures. This leads to worse miscommunications
between doctors and the deaf. This is the complaint
a deaf activist posted in the media.
Who is telling the truth in Great Britain.
It was a story that a 7-year old deaf boy was
not able to attend classes for 9 months.
First story is that his teacher quit and
the school district could not find a
replacement. Second story is that missing
paperwork is the reason he is not attending
classes. Fingers are being pointed between
the parents and the school district.
Berkeley, a town in New Jersey, reached settlement
with a deaf man, whose loud voice so angered
the police that they beat him up.

TWO HALF-DEAF ACTORS IN A MOVIE
Many years ago, famous actor Richard Widmark
was deaf in one ear. Also, another famous actor
Jimmy Stewart was deaf in one ear.
Making it worse was that director John Ford
was late deafened.
Both Widmark and Stewart worked together on
one movie, directed by Ford.
It was confusing. In one scene, Stewart and
Widmark were placed across the room. Stewart’s
deaf ear was opposite Widmark’s deaf ear – and
they could not easily communicate with each
other. And they could not hear the commands
by Ford!
The cameraman had to use hand signals
to tell these two actors what to do!

BE CAREFUL WITH ASL CLASSES
If you want to learn ASL and enroll in a sign language
class, be very careful.
Some classes teach only Signed English; other classes
teach ASL.
Both Signed English and ASL are two different languages.
even though both groups may (or may not) understand
each other.
So, it is important to make sure what sign language
is taught before you enroll!

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:
As Fall approaches, many people are talking about the fall and
foliage and this being their favorite season.
Many of us who have Usher Syndrome view this season differently.
Soon there will be less daylight. We lose 2 minutes of daylight
each day.
So this is difficult time for many of us.
Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.
