The Captioned ABC News made its debut on
December 3, 1973. It was shown late at night
to about 100 local TV stations. It continued
until the first decoder came out on the market
during the early eighties. The problem
was that it was already “old” news. ABC
would broadcast its original news at 6 PM,
and the captioners would work on these
captions for re-broadcast at 11 PM. At
least for the Deaf Community, old news was
better than no news at all!
