The Gallaudet Iron Men won the 1943 Mason-Dixon Conference
basketball championship with just five players playing
three full games. The Gallaudet substitutes just sat
on the bench.

Not just once would coach English Sullivan use his subs.
He had plenty of subs, all of them that wanted to play.
Some of them confronted the coach during the games,
demanding to play, but the coach waved them off!

The coach substituted freely throughout the season
using different starting lineup combinations –
but the chemistry clicked with just these five players
during the last few regular season games.

He just did not want to break up a winning combination!

His subs hated sitting on the bench, but cannot
argue with a conference championship, the only one
in Gallaudet’s history.
