POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Communication and Access is a leadership role responsible for managing the quality provision of interpreting services for all TLC programs (Access), and the staff and community ASL Classes (Communication).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prioritize the reduction of bias and lead to ensure consistent commitment and action toward becoming an equitable and anti-racist department within the organization.
  • Develop, communicate and update interpreter and ASL department policies and procedures.
  • Supervise, support, develop and evaluate department staff
  • Set agendas, provide reports and conduct regular department meetings.
  • Oversee all functions of contracted interpreter and community and staff ASL services.
  • Develop and maintain fiscally responsible Departmental budgets.
  • Work with the Executive Team to assess program effectiveness, and develop goals for continued growth and development.

Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years experience as a community-based interpreter.
  • Near-native fluency in American Sign Language
    • Written communication at sufficient levels to ensure effective and appropriate communication and report writing.
  • Masters Degree, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 3 years leadership experience
  • Experience supervising employees
  • Collaborative and inclusive leadership style
  • RID Certified, E.I.P.A. and experience mentoring interpreters-

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Interpreting Services Department at The Learning Center for the Deaf provides American Sign Language interpreting in a variety of settings, including educational, medical and therapeutic environments. Our Deaf interpreters have extensive training in utilizing their native knowledge of ASL for assessment and specialized situations. These assignments require nuanced translations that contain cultural, visual, tactile and linguistic elements. We also provide information regarding the Deaf Community, how to work with interpreters, and how to make communication more accessible. Our team of schedulers coordinate, schedule, and support interpreters in an effort to maintain the smooth operation of the entire department.

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interpreters will provide interpreting services for a variety of internal and external clients for in-person or remote requests.
  • Interpreting assignments can range from but are not limited to administrative meetings, student and parent conferences, educational mainstreaming, in-services, mental health situations, IEP/ISP meetings, guest lectures, field trips, performing arts, and formal ceremonies.
  • Interpreters will work solo or teamed with interpreters such as ASL or Deaf Interpreters, DeafBlind Interpreters, and Legal interpreters as appropriate.
  • Maintain professional growth and certification through participation in Certificate Maintenance Program (CMP) or Associate Continuing Education Tracking (ACET).
  • Participate in in-service and staff development activities, as appropriate.
  • Performs other tasks as directed by the Supervisor.

Requirements

  • ASL Interpreter required to have a general interpreter training program or Must have or be willing to obtain the status of Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing State Approved Interpreter, national certification preferred (RID, BEI)
  • Minimum of one to five years interpreting experience preferred
  • Must demonstrate sufficient linguistic fluency and cognitive flexibility
  • Advanced cultural knowledge of the Deaf community and its resources is required
  • Use standard practices and ethical decision making in accordance to the Code of Professional Conduct and the Standard Practice Papers
  • Prospective candidate must have the knowledge and experience to pass the Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment (EIPA), or to be eligible for a DESE waiver
  • Appropriate use of spoken and written language(s) including spelling, vocabulary, and grammar
