Way back in 1971, there was a baseball game between
Gallaudet and University of Baltimore. Gallaudet lost
10-1, and hardly anyone nowadays would remember the
game, except for a certain University of Baltimore

That pitcher was Don Rhoten, the past WPSD
superintendent. Not only it was a case of a deaf
pitcher facing deaf batters, but it was a case of
a future deaf superintendent facing two future
deaf superintendents!

The two other past superintendents that played
in that long forgotten game was Alex Slappey
(Wisconsin School for the Deaf) and Ron Stern
(New Mexico School for the Deaf).

It was not known if the Gallaudet team was aware
at that time that they were facing a deaf pitcher.

Over the years Gallaudet has faced deaf collegiate
opponents but these occurrences are rare.
