Martina Rautier, who is deaf, and a Canadian, was
one of the world’s best Telemark skiers during the
mid-nineties. Telemark is a form of competitive
skiing, not part of the regular skiing competitive
events. It is also known as free heel skiing, where
skiers “stand” on their toes while going downhill.
It never really caught on, but this event continues
on a low profile. Martina, while deaf, does not know
sign language.
