Understanding the Historical Roots of American Sign Language

“Sign Language Archaeology” is a new book that investigates the
development of American Sign Language (ASL), from its infancy to major
events is ASL history.

According to tradition, ASL evolved from French Sign Language. In this
engrossing study, authors Ted Supalla and Patricia Clark, analyze
metalinguistic assumptions of these early accounts. They also examine in
depth a key set of films made by the National Association of the Deaf
(NAD) between 1910 and 1920 that featured 15 sign masters.

Revealing the changes that have occurred to ASL through generations of
use, this book focuses on the rediscovery of the literary legacy of the
Deaf American voice.

in order to educate the public on what deafness is
all about.

a cop a pig in British Sign Language.

Suddenly the battery went dead. He had no other new
battery and was too lazy to go to the store to buy
new batteries.
Instead, he turned on the TV set with very loud

Teachers of the Deaf are preferred to enter a master’s level with
some experience.  The minimum requirement for this position is a
Bachelor’s level degree with certification in Deaf Education.  PA
Instructional I or II certification in Deaf Education required.

operations and personnel, expansion of services provided in the
region, quality of service and financial stability within the
region.  This includes provision of direct services to consumers,
maintenance of all licensing regulations, oversight of program
budgets, supervision and daily support to direct care staff and
management level employees, maintenance of communication and
relationships with outside service providers and families,
involvement with the clinical team, completion of monthly and
residential reports, and participation on agency committees.

Qualifications:               Master’s Degree preferred.  Qualified
BA degree applicants will be considered.  Seven years’ experience in
the mental health field.  Four years’ experience in a
management/supervisory role.  Candidate must have strong leadership,
administrative and communication skills, both in person and in
writing.  Fluency in ASL and familiarity with other visual
communication modes and language levels.

support to all programs.  Duties: answer incoming voice, relay and VP
calls; responsible for various duties such as data entry, manage
calendars, coordinate meetings/trainings; take minutes; track
supplies and handle all general correspondence. Will troubleshoot and
assist wherever and whenever possible.

Qualifications:               Minimum of a HS diploma + 3 years’
administrative assistance experience; proficiency in MS word and
excel.  AA degree preferred.  Must possess strong writing and
proofreading skills and excellent organizational skills.  Fluency in
American Sign Language strongly preferred.
