Oral deaf people in Great Britain are complaining
that there is too much public emphasis on the value
of British Sign Language at the expense of oralism!

Two deaf individuals that were apartment-hunting in
Japan, were refused assistance by apartment rental
agency. Why? These rental people did not want to
deal with the deaf and gave excuses such as “how
can we contact deaf during emergencies?” The
national rental headquarters apologized. Deaf
activists wanted to file a discrimination lawsuit
but found there is no such basis in the national

Advice for deaf clients seeking legal assistance


A group spoke during legislative sessions in Colorado,
opposing shifting of funds from landline phones to wireless
This group is not opposed to wireless systems per se. It
simply opposes money moved to wireless systems because
telephone companies may no longer have the incentive to keep
landline phones continuing.
And if that happens, deaf people, lacking wireless devices,
will have no access during emergencies!

My recent show in New Jersey was a very positive experience.

I asked the college to contact students in the ASL program to volunteer.

The students provided me with SSP services for all 3 days!  I believe 8 students volunteered.

They all worked in pairs!

Also, the hotel I stayed at had a restaurant.  One of the ASL students worked there!

I could order my food in ASL!   This student also arranged room service for me for breakfast!

I was spoiled with all the support I needed for the weekend.

The Division of Special Education at Western Oregon University seeks qualified applicants with experience in interpreter education for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position in the graduate Interpreting Studies and undergraduate ASL/English Interpreting programs. Coursework in the Interpreting programs are offered in a variety of formats, including on-campus, blended, online, and condensed formats. The undergraduate ASL/English Interpreting program at WOU is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education and prepares students as generalists who are able to interpret in a variety of settings. Students are prepared through a curriculum infused with the demand-control schema, which serves as the foundational framework on which to build their professional practice. WOU.s undergraduate interpreting program was the inaugural winner of the Sorenson VRS Interpreter Education Award of Excellence in 2008. The primarily online graduate program in Interpreting Studies prepares experienced interpreters to become leaders, mentors, and teachers of interpreting. This program recently won the University Professional and Continuing Education Association Outstanding Credit Program Award. Prepare financial component of NTID?s annual budget request to the

their staffs.

Assure that NTID expenditures are in compliance with all RIT policies

The person in this position will provide case management services

The Project Manager/ Interim Director is contracted to be the interim
Chief Executive Officer of Denali Deaf Community Center. The Director
reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the
organization’s consistent achievement of its mission, corporate
compliance and financial objectives. In program development, grant
management and administration, the Director will:

Specific Executive responsibilities:
1.    Provide Visionary Leadership by ensuring DDCC has an effective
strategic plan and objectives to achieve its mission, demonstrating
organizational movement toward goals with consistent and timely
2.    Ensure Fiscal Stability by developing program, organizational
and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carry
out plans and policies authorized by the board.
3.    Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all
areas of the organization’s work.
4.    Maintain official records, ensure compliance with no profit
regulations, for profit business enterprise, federal, state and local
regulations, ensure grant compliance with the State of Alaska.
5.    Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and
trends in the field including social enterprise and business
development & participating in professional organizations.

In budget and finance, the Director will:
1.    Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial
practices for the DDCC as a non profit and corresponding for profit
companies including a cafe, commercial kitchen and facility rental.
2.    Work with the staff, Finance Committee, and the board in
preparing a budget; see that the organization operates within budget
3.    Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the
organization to carry out its work by building unrestricted cash
4.    Jointly, with the Executive Committee of the board of
directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and
jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.
5.    Manage a 2.6 million dollar budget, ensuring appropriate fiscal
compliance is in place with state use of funds.

In Project Management the Director will:
1.    Achieve operational objectives by contributing information and
recommendations to strategic plans and reviews; preparing and
completing action plans; implementing production, productivity,
quality, and customer-service standards.
2.    Coordinate contracting, bids and monitor contractor
deliverables, resolving problems; completing audits; identifying
trends; determining system improvements; implementing change.
3.    Mange project funds via financial objectives by forecasting
requirements; scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances;
initiating corrective actions.

In communications, the Director will:
1.    See that the board is kept fully informed on the condition of
the organization and all important factors influencing it.
2.    Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and

English, verbalization and gesture.
4.    Establish sound working relationships and cooperative
arrangements with community groups and organizations.
5.    Represent the programs and point of view of the organization to
agencies, organizations, and the general public.  Participate in
community membership organizations.
6.    Enhance DDCC’s reputation by accepting ownership for
accomplishing new and different projects; exploring opportunities to
add value to agency accomplishments.

In relations with staff, the Director will:
1.    Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of
all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.
2.    Accomplish human resource objectives by recruiting, selecting,
orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and
disciplining employees; communicating job expectations; planning,
monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; planning and
reviewing compensation actions; enforcing policies and
procedures.           Ensure that job descriptions are developed,
that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human
resource practices are in place.
3.    See that an effective management team, with appropriate
provision for succession, is in place.
4.    Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and
assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total
program of the organization.
5.    Maintain a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a
diverse staff of top quality people.

American School for the Deaf (ASD) is seeking an Executive Director to lead and provide strategic vision to the nation’s oldest school for the deaf and the birthplace of deaf education in the U.S. ASD serves deaf and hard of hearing infants, children, youth, adults and their families and caregivers through its statewide Birth-to-Three program, the core pre K-12 grade campus-based program, outreach and support services provided to school districts, a licensed treatment center and academic program for behaviorally challenged deaf and hard of hearing students, an international program for high school-age students and an adult vocational program.

The Executive Director is the CEO and administrative head of the school and reports to the Board of Directors. The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in Education, Special Education, Administration or a related field; 8-10 years of progressive leadership experience in a complex and diverse educational institution; excellent written and communications skills and ASL proficiency; finance and budgeting expertise and strategic planning experience.
