-- a deaf person is a finalist for presidency of a college
You may remember Jane Fernandes whose selection as new
Gallaudet president caused so much unrest on the campus.
It forced the Gallaudet trustees to cancel her appointment.
After leaving Gallaudet she became the provost and vice
chancellor at University of North Carolina at Asheville.
And now this - she is one of the three finalists for the
presidency of Guilford College, Greensboro, NC. Right now
she is on the Guilford campus for interviews along with
two other candidates. How is a deaf person able to
function in a high-stress hearing environment? She always
has interpreters with her wherever she is on the campus.
-- A famous actor & comedian was a deaf babysitter
Todd Barry is a famous comedian and actor with a list
of TV and movies to his credit. As a young man in
New York City years ago, he needed a job. A school
for the deaf - 47 School for the Deaf - hired him
as a substitute teacher. In a recent interview he
said that he didn't know sign language and only thing
he did in the classroom was to be a babysitter!
He was trying to be funny, but it is not funny when
deaf kids are trapped in a classroom with someone
who knows no signs.
- a deaf sports announcer on radio
Jesse Smith, who is deaf, has been praised for his
work as sports announcer on a radio station in
Indiana. He has been announcing football and
basketball games at Carmel High School. Additionally,
he has helped host the Family Fun Run for Peyton
Manning Children's Hospital, an event which has
raised thousands of dollars.
