-- the mermaid is deaf
At Sacramento, CA, there is a bar that is called Dive Bar. This
bar has a 8,000-gallon water tank. It is not for fishes that
swim by. It is for mermaids! One of the mermaids is
Brenna DeBartolo who is deaf. When she learned about that
bar, she signed up to become a mermaid. It was not easy -
she had to practice being a mermaid for 30 days before
the bar owner qualified her for the job! She can be
seen using ASL while swimming inside the tank. Her picture
is at:

-- a big reverse with deaf/hearing theater actors
When we see a deaf/hearing play, it is always the
deaf actor that sign across the stage while a hearing
person follows him, shouting in voice what the
deaf person is saying. But with The Shrek play,
taking place at a theater in Tucson, Arizona, there
is a reverse. The hearing actor shouts out his script
lines on the stage, and following him is the deaf
actor signing in ASL!
-- a big irony with a deaf mainstreamed student
A deaf mainstreamed student is attending a high
school in Alabama. Her high school does not offer
ASL classes. Her goal is to receive an advanced
diploma, which requires two years of foreign
language. Without two years of ASL she cannot
receive this advanced diploma. She has offered
to teach herself ASL for two years, but needs
ASL teacher to evaulate her signing skills.
At this point this high school does not know
what to do!
