DeafDigest - 01 August 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, August 1, 2014   -- a long, nasty, ugly and brutal case in Canada Jasmin Simpson is a deaf counselor with the Canadian Hearing Society in Toronto. She was angry that her college debt was 60 percent higher than hearing students. Seven years ago she challenged the Canada Student Loan Program, which promised equality for everyone, both deaf and hearing. The government offered to forgive her entire debt on one condition - that she will not go to the court. She refused, saying it was not fair for others that had to suffer the same thing! The government's response was ugly but she would not back down. The Ontario Supreme Court was involved but backed off. As it stands right now, this case is supposed to go to trial. Will it? Already the Canadian government is pretty much embarrassed by the whole thing.   -- the reason USA is slow on text emergency calls We have the updated technology for these deaf text emergency calls (fire, police, medical). Yet, according to a newspaper report, only 100 emergency call centers out of 6,000 in USA have the equipment for these deaf text emergency calls. This is shocking and disappointing. Why is this happening? Lack of money!   -- a deputy sheriff; love him or hate him In Denver, deputy sheriff Steven Valerio was fired from his job. He was fired for getting into a bad fight with a hearing prisoner. Should he be hated by the deaf? Well, before he was fired. he was named the Employee of the Month by the prison as he attended sign language classes to be able to communicate with his deaf prisoners. How many prison officials would do that?   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest to make subscription changes, go to http://deafdigest.com, click on the "subscribe" icon and follow screen instructions 07/27/14 Blue edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 07/27/14 Gold edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
