Alabama and Georgia sits together on the same border. - for ASL News version, please click on: http://www.deafdigest.com/bus.htm ENDORSING THE DEAF IN GREAT BRITAIN There was a newspaper story of Bryan Robson, a famous Manchester United soccer player endorsing Royal National Institute for Deaf People for the charity of the year honor. Robson is as famous in Great Britain as Cal Ripken, Jr is in USA. But we do not see Ripken endorsing NAD as the charity of the year in USA. And Manchester United is to British soccer what New York Yankees is to USA baseball. A DEAF-BLIND BUSINESS OWNER Could a deaf-blind man operate a business? DeafDigest always says - why not! A story was run this week in a Michigan newspaper about Dale Layer, who is deaf-blind and a resident of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. He was employed as a supervisor at a warehouse until vision problems, later diagnosed as Usher Syndrome, became a problem. Forced to leave his job, he felt bad about himself before pulling himself up, with assistance of the Michigan Commission for the Blind. It was not easy; he had to take classes and to be trained. He has been operating his own business for one year - named JR Vending, which stocks vending machines at various locations across the town. A family member drives him to vending machine locations for servicing and refills. BURGLARS AND HEARING CARS OR DEAF CARS Is it a joke or a fact that when cars have these "burglar prevention" cards sticking on the windshields, it tells the burglars that these cars are worth breaking into? What about Deaf Cars? These are cars with "deaf identity" cards sticking on the windshields. Would these tell the burglars to back off because deaf devices are not worth breaking into for? SWITCHING WORDS AROUND Is the word deaf interchangeable with dead? No, but sloppy spellers often get both words mixed up with each other. There was a posting on the web site regarding a punk music band - titled Deaf in the Dead Zone. Would it make a difference if two words were switched around - Dead in the Deaf Zone? Rockers make themselves deaf because of their fondness for loud punk music - and to be deaf is to be in the dead zone (until they learn to cope with their deafness)! WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS FORMER NOTETAKER FOR THE DEAF A question is for all of you: Q. Who is the world's most famous former notetaker for the deaf? It is Michelle Obama. As a high school student she wrote classroom notes for the benefit of her deaf and hard of hearing classmates. This piece of information was revealed on the Entertainment Tonight TV show that was aired few days ago. IT PAYS TO LIVE IN AN AREA WITH HIGH DEAF POPULATION A hearing contestant became a Jeopardy! champion. He correctly answered ASL-related questions most of the time and became the champion. This contestant lives in Churchville, NY, a suburb of Rochester. Said a viewer: Perhaps it helps to live in an area of the United States with one of the largest populations of people who are deaf and hard of hearing A WRONG PREDICTION AND THE DEAF Who wants to hear actors talk? A Warner Bros. executive said in 1927 when the first talkie movie came out. DeafDigest wishes Warner was correct, but it was not to be - until captions came up. ................................................................ ................................................................
