DeafDigest - 01 May 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, May 1, 2014 -- a deaf swimming cap A special swimming cap for the deaf? Yes, for those with a CI, who don't want the device to get wet while swimming. Jonathan Riggs, not deaf, came up with a special invention - assembling the cap with latex and rubber pockets sewn together. It works and the deaf swimmer can hear while swimming. What is so special with Jonathan? He is just 12-years old and his younger brother is deaf. They both wanted to swim and communicate together. They live in South Allegheny, Pennsylvania.   -- Sorenson gets out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy There was an announcement today that Sorenson has gotten out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy with stronger balance sheet and with debt wiped out. The press release was brief, lacking additional details. If, as Sorenson said, debt was wiped out, it may mean one thing - that management given up some control of the company to the creditors. Is it good or bad? Sorenson cares about the deaf; the creditors may not care about the deaf; they only care about money. Normally Chapter 11 proceedings are long, but this one was quick, and which is unusual.   -- NAD board member on VP with a congressional candidate David O. Reynolds, a NAD board member, was on VP recently with George Cicotte, a Republican from the state of Washington state, who is campaigning for the  House of Representatives vacant seat. Cicotte has received some support from deaf individuals. He is not deaf but fingerspells very well. Cicotte has promised to support the Congressional Deaf Caucus, if elected. And he paid for interpreting fees out of his pockets at two events - at Yakima Valley Association of the Deaf and a Rally by Volunteers. The campaign will be tough - Cicotte, a Republican, faces 9 other Republicans as well as with 6 Democrats and 2 Independents. If Cicotte wins, we hope that he will work together with the deaf - both on the state and on the national levels.   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest 04/27/14 Blue edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 04/27/14 Gold edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
