A deaf person often grows up in a hearing family without knowing secrets such as a brother being arrested, a close cousin was actually adopted, etc, etc. Hearing family members know about these secrets but they often do not share these with the deaf family member. But it is always that many years later they will tell him the secrets that they never told him in the past. Are these hearing people afraid that "bad family news" is not good for the deaf to know? - for ASL News version with captions, please visit: http://deafdigest.com/videos/video-reunions/ -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- Lip reading tale The boss asked his deaf employee for something. the deaf employee thought the boss said: please get me a cream of photocopying paper the boss actually said: please get me a ream of photocopying paper -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- This week's ASL video in youtube HEARING TIGER AND DEAF TIGER When we mention Tiger, almost all of us will know it is Tiger Woods, the most famous golfer in the world. What about Deaf Tiger? Yes. Tiger Holland, was a deaf man in Australia. No, he was not a golfer, but he was involved with horse racing for many years as jockey and trainer. When he died last year, Australian horse racing people gave him great honors at his funeral. He did not know ASL (Australian Sign Language). - for ASL News version with captions, please visit: http://deafdigest.com/videos/videos-tiger/ -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Using computer-aided transcription (CAT) or captioning software, a realtime captioner utilizes a computerized personal dictionary in order to translate steno strokes into English words. The captioner may input entries into a personal dictionary that look something like this: KOPB=con STAPB=Stan TEUPB=tin OEP/-L=opal If the captioner were to write the sounds KOPB/STAPB/TEUPB/OEP/-L, they would translate as “con Stan tin opal. In order to translate properly, the captioner would have to input an additional entry to his or her dictionary like this: KOPB/STAPB/TEUPB/OEP/-L=Constantinople Every word or phrase that a captioner writes must be in the computer dictionary created by the captioner. With thousands of words and phrases in a captioner’s dictionary, it is sometimes difficult for the captioner to remember if a particular word or phrase has been inputted into the dictionary. You might see occasional unusual translations when you are watching realtime captioning simply because a captioner does not have that word or phrase in his or her dictionary yet. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- For postings, announcements and employment ad rates, please email mailto:barry@deafdigest.com -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: States, because of bad economy, are cutting back on their expenditures. And it impacts on many universities that rely on state funds. Washington State University is no exception. Planned cuts may eliminate positions in the deaf teacher training program. Possibly other universities are suffering the same fate, as far as Deaf Education Programs are concerned but are not saying anything, at least publicly. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Many deaf people try to go into business for themselves for one simple reason - no one would hire them, very especially true in Kenya. A deaf man operates his own carpentry business in Nairoba. People are saying he is doing very well. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- for sub/unsub options, go to deafdigest.com Employment ads web site is at: http://deafdigest.com/category/jobs/ -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- DeafDigest Copyright 2018 by Barry Strassler, DeafDigest. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
