-- a President refuses to have his speech interpreted
Taiwan president President Ma Ying-jeou has refused to allow
his New Year speech be interpreted for the deaf! And even
worse, his speech was not captioned! The Taiwan Association
for Disability Rights is very angry about it. Why did the
president refuse? His office would not explain why - but
it was not the first time he has refused interpreters!
-- a deaf person in an incomplete movie
A movie - Memories of the Warsaw Ghetto has been shot. It features
ghetto survivor Eugene Bergman, a deaf man and a retired professor
of English at Gallaudet. Money talks, and when it ran out, the
filming has been stopped, with just three scenes to go plus
post-production editing. Those wanting to know more about the
film and the finances, should email Claire Bergman at
cebergman53@gmail.com. The Documentaries in Progress is the
production company behind the filming.
-- dancing for the joy of it
Ted Renaud, a deaf man of Florence, Massachusetts, loves to dance.
He attends dance events in small towns in the state, dancing
as many as 4 or 5 times a week. He is such a well known figure
in these dance halls that many hearing women love to dance
with him. He continues dancing until the program is shut down
for the evening/ One time it was 7 AM! He cannot hear the music
nor knows the beats, but his eyes quickly pick up the action and
he knows what dance it is. And many women, knowing of his deafness,
would gently cue him into the right dance. Ted must be a young man,
dancing so often? No! He is 63 years old. To stay in shape for
these dances, he works out at a gym on a regular basis. He has
been at it for four years so far.
