DeafDigest - 02 May 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, May 2, 2014   -- worth it for deaf person to become truck driver? For many years, the United States Department of Transportation did not allow the deaf to drive trucks across state lines. We, the deaf, have won the battle and we already have a list of deaf people that want to become truck drivers. Worth it? The Washingon Post ran an article about truck drivers. Why? Average take home pay is $32,000 per year for owners of trucks. They drive trucks for about 12 hours per day. What about driving trucks for a trucking company instead of owning a truck? More trucking companies hire truck drivers that own their own trucks and reject those that do not own trucks. Years ago, driving a truck was a good way to make a living; not any more! So, our hard fought win to drive trucks may have been too late.   -- two deaf partners want to defeat The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc Chris Landry and Ken Brown, both deaf, have started an on-line business that hopes to compete against the Post Office, the Mail Boxes Etc, The UPS Store, etc. They think they can do a much better job for customers than their competitors. Will they succeed? Time will tell.   -- an old black and white movie leads to a deaf-related career Amanda Bavin, not deaf, is a real time captioner; she captions TV programs in Great Britain that the deaf watch. How did she get started on her career. She loves watching old black and white movies on TV - and she saw a movie of a court case that had a scene of a stenographer using a special machine to record the court proceedings. Curious, she learned more about it and then went to school to become a captioner for the BBC.     Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest 04/27/14 Blue edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 04/27/14 Gold edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
