DeafDigest - 02 May 2016

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, May 2, 2016 -- one state follows another state It was not too long ago that Hawaii became the first state to have this Open Captions movie law. Very possibly Rhode Island will become the second state. There is a bill that requires movie theaters to show open captions at least twice a week per movie. Introducing the bill is Rep. Arthur Handy. Why is he so interested in that bill? He is a Coda and he saw for himselves how much his deaf parents struggled with the heavy captioning equipment at movie theaters! A picture is at: http://35.182.75.222/arthur-handy-rhode-island-delegate/     -- nfl draft was not perfect Fans of pro football were hooked to the NFL draft that was shown on TV for three days over this past weekend. Only one thing ruined the televised draft - On Saturday, the last day of the draft, the program began at noon - a football person was speaking on the program - without captions! This went on for about 5-10 minutes then captions suddenly appeared. Did an engineer fall asleep and forgot to turn on captions? Complain to FCC? Forget it!     -- involving a deaf child in a hearing business Many business owners do not involve their deaf children with the business operations, thinking the deaf cannot do it. It is different with La Bonita, the tortilla making business owned by a husband and a wife. It is popular in Kern County where they have several big accounts with supermarkets. They have a deaf daughter, currently in high school. Instead of keeping her out of business operations, they involve her. She attends business meetings where vendors see for themselves how she helps out with the family-owned business.     Latest deaf jobs: http://deafdigest.com/category/jobs/ Barry's collections of past articles (with today's update) -- hotel, deaf-owned, best in world http://deafdigest.com/collections/barrys-collections/ 05/01/16 Blue and Gold editions at: http://deafdigest.com/newsletters/
