DeafDigest - 02 November 2016

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, November 2, 2016 -- state Attorney General happy Supreme Court reject deaf case A very happy person in Texas is state Attorney General Ken Paxton. He was angry when a group of deaf filed a discrimination lawsuit, accusing driving schools of refusing to provide interpreters. The Supreme Court agreed with him, and Paxton said the court did the right thing. Why did the Court dismiss the case? Because either the deaf moved out of Texas or got drivers' licenses on their own despite discriminatiion. One hotel issue may be tricky - web access. Hotel guests are given passwords to allow their laptops to access the web. In many hotels, using the password is easy. In many other hotels, using the password is tricky and difficult. If it is difficult, then it may require a voice phone call to get technical assistance. For the deaf, it is Catch-22 - how can the deaf person use the phone call through the relay if their laptop cannot access the web because of password problems!   -- reasons deaf restaurant is struggling Yesterday's DeafDigest mentioned SIGNS, an all-deaf restaurant in Toronto struggling for business. Why did it struggle? A deaf foodie that lives in the neigbhorhood said several reasons - always changing their menus; expensive dishes that the deaf cannot afford; the oversized restaurant layout; public tired of the deafness hype among the waiters. The mission of all restaurants is just two words - great food, and in that case, SIGNS came up short. This is sad because deaf waiters would lose their jobs if the restaurant eventually closed.   Latest deaf jobs: http://deafdigest.com/category/jobs/ Barry's collections of past articles (with today's update) -- accidental deaf actor in a Hollywood movie http://deafdigest.com/collections/barrys-collections/ 10/30/16 Blue and Gold editions at: http://deafdigest.com/newsletters/
