Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Cleveland
Judge Ed Wade, that departed us. He loved using
ASL and did not use interpreters while addressing
the deaf that showed up in his oourtroom!
Top stories about the deaf:
Brett Lee, not deaf, is well known cricket player
in Australia. He believes that the deaf of India
can become hearing thanks to CI's - and as a result,
been pushing to get this project started.
There is a twist to public sign language classes
taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia, on a car-free
day. The class is not for the deaf to teach
hearing how to sign. It is for the deaf to
teach non-signing deaf how to sign!
An article in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine is saying that babies born deaf may
be premature with low weight. DeafDigest does
not know, but eventually these premature, low
weight deaf babies will eventually become
healthy deaf babies! After all babies
eventually outgrow their birth conditions.
Deaf people that play video games (see picture
link above in this edition) are saying that
accessibility (captions and visual beeps) have
improved the past 10-15 years but still have
a long way to go.
Over a thousand deaf Europeans converged on the
headquarters of the European Parliament to
demand better recognition of national sign
languages/

FIRED FOR WATCHING VIDEOS ON WORK COMPUTER
A deaf employee was fired for watching too
many videos on his work computer.
He thought he was careful. His computer
screen was turned away from hearing eyes.
Hearing people that pass by his office cannot
see the computer screen.
But he was fired. How did the boss find out?
The deaf employee did not turn off the sounds
and everyone in the office knew about it!

WHAT IS DEAFVILLE OR DEAF TOWN?
In some cities, we have deaf homes that are near each
other. Is it Deafville or Deaf Town?
For example, in Bethany Beach, Delaware, there are six
houses near each other. The residents in these houses
are either deaf or know ASL.
Are there rules that will decide if it is Deafville or
not? Is it many if there are six houses - or is it too
few?
Interesting debate?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
People have asked me this question: Are there some shows that may be impossible to caption as a realtime captioner? What about some of the reality programs where there is nonstop action?
On some of these shows, it seems like everyone is talking at the same time, and they are using terminology that ordinary people may not understand.
Fortunately, most of these programs are recorded in advance, and they should not need to use realtime captioners. These programs are captioned using post-production captioning. Although the programs may be difficult to caption, someone may be able to take the time to listen to the same segment over and over in order to try to understand what everyone is saying. The captioner may be able to research unusual terminology on the Internet.
Unfortunately, in order to save money, sometimes producers of shows are choosing to use realtime captioning rather than post-production captioning on these types of shows. When that happens, you may run into a circumstance where it is an impossible show to caption accurately.
If the speakers are too fast-paced and overlapping or if they are using unfamiliar terminology, the realtime captioners can only do the best that they can do the first time around. They don't get another chance to listen to it. In this circumstance, it really is unfair to the caption viewers because they deserve to see more accurate captioning.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Dick Tracy celebrates his 75th birthday
this week. Through the Deaf Eyes, Tracy used
his wrist radio to communicate with the police.
This concept, years ahead of its time, would
evolve into our Deaf Pagers, though not placed
on our wrists.
Also, one of Tracy's enemies would be
extremely unlipreadable - this hated "Mumbles"
character.
And many of us watched the Dick Tracy movie,
which of course, was captioned.
At least we could understand, via captions,
what we couldn't lipread, Mumbles' conversation.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Years ago DeafDigest editor met a deaf man from
France who made Correspondence Education his full
time living. He corresponded with students via mail,
correcting their classroom papers and then sending
the stuff back to them. Fast forward today, Douglas
McCarty, who is deaf, teaches online courses at the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Students
do not know he is deaf while they interact with him.
He was written up in a recent press release.
