DeafDigest - 03 April 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, April 3, 2014 -- sometimes dangerous to be famous! Many famous people face dangers - the Paparazzi, physical threats from strangers, e-mail threats, facebook bashings, jealous twitter messages, autograph requests, etc. Marlee Matlin is no exception. She received a twitter message from a hearing fan who threatened to kill herself. The fan gave her name, saying she lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Marlee immediately forwarded the tweet to the Nova Scotia police. They are looking for her but think the tweet may be a fake. If that woman is arrested she faces 5 years in jail for being a public nuisance!   -- a deaf person leaves a big and important job We have had a deaf person in a big and important job at the White House - Claudia Gordon, a deaf attorney, who served as Obama's advisor on disability-related, and deaf-related issues. She is leaving her job and returning to her old job in the federal sector. Do keep in mind that all White House jobs are political and temporary. Will White House find a deaf person to replace her? Good question as people in politics may not want to accept a new job for only a short time as we will have a new president in 2016.   -- a school for the deaf is low on cash It is not happy news. The Austine School for the Deaf/Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of hearing is broke. Not willing to allow a school for the deaf to permanently shut its doors, a committee was formed by a group of alumni members. The committee name is Save Austine Committee. Why cannot the state pour more money into the school? Austine is a private school, like with almost all of the schools for the deaf in the Northeast. And legislators may not want to give money to a private school.
