Dedication
Within a span of one week, American School for the Deaf
lost two leaders. DeafDigest is dedicating this edition
to these two individuals. Below is a posting by
Executive Director Jeff Bravin:
ASD lost two great leaders this past week!
It is with deep heart that I share this news. I was informed that Dennis Palka, our beloved alumni and faculty of ASD has passed away. It was unexpected and I'm still in shock.
Dennis Palka has been with ASD for more years that any one of us can imagine, he's a beloved Alumni and Faculty of the school. He has undertaken so many
roles at the school in our academic programs, athletic programs, international programs, alumni relations among many other activities. He was also a former
Federation President, a leader in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, very involved with Hartford Club of the Deaf.
He sorely will be missed by everyone and may he rest in peace.
ASD also lost Lillian Garcia Peterkin. She died March 20, 2016 at Conn Hospice after a long illness. She was the wife of David V. Peterkin. Lillian was born to Puerto Rican parents in New Haven, She graduated from the American School for the Deaf in 1981 receiving a Bachelor's Degree in ASL/English Interpreting from Northeastern University in 2001. Lillian presented numerous training to deaf community members and interpreters on topics such as medical interpreting, deaf interpreting and consumers rights to interpreting services, all over the United States. She spent over 20 years as coordinator
of interpreting services in Mass. and Conn.
She will sorely be missed by everyone and may she rest in peace.
DeafDigest also dedicates this edition to Kenneth
Schaffer, Sterling, VA, that departed us. He was
a long time civil servant with the Federal Government
and on the side, loved railroads. He contributed many
articles on railroading, basically "riding from a
perspective of a deaf passenger."
Top stories about the deaf:
The Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Sarasota, FL, has closed up after 31 years of operation.
The NIH is embarking on a new study - Improving the health of the deaf and hard-of-hearing population through accessible patient-reported outcome measures. What is that supposed
to mean in simple English?
Neil Maes, a deaf fifth grader at a school in South Carolina,
has advanced to the nationals in Spelling Bee.
A story about the Deaf Community in Rochester has been
featured in the Syracuse Post-Standard's Empire Magazine.
Deaf leaders in Slovakia are trying to make the
Slovakian society more accepting of deaf people.

MOST COMMON COMMENT BY ORAL DEAF
If you bump into an oral deaf, what is
their most common comment?
They almost always say:
I am deaf but I don't sign!

100 MILES PER HOUR FINGERPSPELLING
A restaurant waitress had a deaf couple at
her table.
She bragged of knowing sign language. What
did she do?
She fingerspelled something at about 100 miles
per hour! It was too fast that the deaf person
just nodded his head and ignored her.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
The interpreter completed her mission with a deaf patient at
a state hospital. The facilities was secured with locked
sliding doors manned by remote TV surveillance.
For some reason the interpreter was not formally escorted
out of the premises by the uniformed personnel. She was left
behind the locked facility and pretty much ignored.
The interpreter ended up, screaming and yelling at the
intercom, asking for assistance. In the meantime the
commotion attracted the attention of patients, seeing
everything through the glass divider. They were all
laughing and mocking at her, and even mocking the patient
that needed the interpreter in the first place..
After 10 minutes of struggling with the useless intercom,
the interpreter whipped out her cell phone and dialed the
hospital director asking him to take her out. This did the trick.
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
In order to be able to tell good realtime captioning from bad realtime captioning, we must understand a few things.
First of all, if a program is being captioned live, there are bound to be some mistakes because the captioners are only human and they do make mistakes. When they are captioning a program live, there is no time to fix the mistakes.
However, it would help to educate ourselves about what is an acceptable amount of errors. There are times when the captioning may be absolutely terrible with error after error, and we must not just settle for poor captioning. We must let the people in charge of providing the captioning know about this lack of quality.
There are people who say that they know how to do realtime captioning who really aren't able to provide quality captioning, and they are being hired because they may charge less than the good realtime captioners.
We cannot expect to see perfect realtime captioning, but we should strive for excellent realtime captioning.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Will we be seeing a throng of deaf attorneys from
anywhere in USA converging onto Washington, DC next month?
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC),
a co-sponsor of the debuting American Bar Association
President's Conference on the Employment of Lawyers with
Disabilities, has scheduled such a conference on
May 22-23 at the Renaissance Washington Hotel in
Washington, DC.
Deaf attorneys' power conference? Hope so.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
If we have questions about the medicine we take, we would
love to discuss these with a deaf pharmacist. At present,
we have a few deaf pharmacists around. Possibly the next
deaf pharmacist will be Sean Burroughs. He is now a third
year student at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, half ways
towards a 6-year program.
note:
DeafDigest is not sure if he is still in the pharmacy
field

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Do read the news (above) from 10 years ago.
DeafDigest editor has noticed a trend - more
deaf attorneys have dropped out of their
professions to pursue different careers.
Fact or fiction? Or is this trend the same
with hearing attorneys?
