-- a senator ordered to function more as a hearing person
Sen. John Astle is a legendary legislator in Maryland
politics. He has a lifelong hearing loss, but with a
hearing aid, he was able to function as a hearing
person. Anyway - to function more as a hearing person?
Yes, as a young man he wanted to serve in the Marines
but was declared unfit because of his deafness.
Because of a shortage of young pilots, the Marines
had second thoughts and accepted him on one condition
that his hearing aids stay always on high volume,
hence functioning more!
-- a doctor shouting at a deaf person
A hospital in Great Britain flunked its quality
service exam by an inspection team. One of the
many reasons for the failing grade was a doctor
shouting at a deaf person, even though he knew
of the patient's deafness! The language the
doctor used was abusive.
-- fined $10,600 for fooling a deaf person
A deaf person wanted to buy an used car, and
went to a dealer. The British dealer, trying
to take advantage of the customer's deafness,
sold him a very defective used car. That car
was so bad that an independent inspection showed
17 different problems with it. The deaf man
sued the British dealer and won. The judge fined
the dealership nearly £7,000 pounds ($10,600
in USA dollars).
