Top stories about the deaf:
Deaf artist Ashley Hannan is having her own
deaf-themed exhibit, consisting of almost
20 paintings, in Rochester, NY.
How does one compare captions at Regal Theaters
and at AMC Theaters? Regal uses glasses; it is
"heavy" on the nose. AMC uses display which may
be difficult to hold steady in the cupholders.
Those that responded said only one thing is best
- open captions!
Nyle DiMarco was seen making ASL version of
Ariana Grande's '7 Rings'.
Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer said
there would be ASL interpreter at her
State of the State address but could
not promise if signing will be shown on
the screen or would be hidden!
Mirchi and Mime, a restaurant in Mumbai (India)
will be hiring an all-deaf staff. Not sure if
the general manager would be deaf or hearing,
though.

ONLY DEAF IN A DINING GROUP
Many times when a group goes to a restaurant
there is a deaf person in it.
The deaf person is lost; he cannot follow the
conversation, so he is left alone with his own
thoughts and dreaming.
Yet, when the group leaves the restaurants
this deaf person is thanked by the hearing diners
for showing up.
Why?

A deaf person thought the hearing person said:

The hearing person actually said:

OLDEST DEAF BOOKS IN LIBRARY
Which library has the world's oldest books on
deafness?
Almost all of us would say Gallaudet library.
That answer is wrong.
The library at Washington University of St Louis
has deafness library books that are over 500 years old!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Over the holiday season, many TV stations have featured special
holiday-themed programming. We have seen special sports and
entertainment shows. Now, as the holiday season comes to an end,
we will find many TV shows beginning their new seasons.
Personally, I have seen a number of shows over this holiday
season where the captioning has been absolutely fabulous, but I
have also seen instances where the captioning was very poor or
totally overlooked. Unfortuntately, there are people out there
who do not think that captioning is important. They may try
to pay as little as possible, so if that means poor quality
captioning or no captioning, that may be what they will try
todo. They may feel that no one is watching the captioning,
so it doesn't matter.
As caption viewers, we must also be advocates for captioning.
If we see a show where the captioning is horrible, we need to
let the cable companies, television stations, and captioning
companies know this. If the television stations are usiing
people who are unqualified just because they don't charge
very much, we have to communicate to them that that is not
acceptable. We must let them know that someone is watching
the captioning.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Today's Super Bowl may show a one-second beer
commercial on TV.
A joke? No. This one-second beer commercial
may cost the sponsor just a cheapie $50,000.
What about the usual question - captions on this
one-second beer commercial?
May cost the sponsor just maybe 50 bucks.
And even this $50 bargain may be wasted money.
There is a 1.5 second gap between the uttered word
on the screen and the captions that follow it.
And with the one-second beer commercial, the
captions will miss the boat, by a half second!

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
An interpreting agency in one part of London is facing
eviction because of housing rules giving priority to
individuals in need of housing as opposed to businesses
in need of housing! The agency is upset and is fighting
back!
