DeafDigest - 03 January 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, January 3, 2014 -- deaf could know ice cream truck is coming without hearing the bell For years, hearing children knew ice cream truck was coming into their neighborhood just by hearing the bell. It is different with a deaf child, having to look for the truck to come by. Not any more? In Eslov, Sweden, the ice cream man sends text to tell the neighborhood kids that his truck is coming soon. Why the change? The hearing neighbors complained that the bell was too loud for them. It forced the driver to stop using the bell! Maybe this is the best way for the deaf to know of these trucks.   -- how does a deaf-blind law school student keep up in classes? DeafDigest mentioned a while ago that Haben Girma, who is deaf-blind, is taking law school classes at Harvard. How is she able to keep up with the classes? Different ways - Harvard disability service office converts text books into braille; digital screen displays are converted again into a braille printer; files saved in flash drives are converted into a digital braille computer; a "notetaker" types questions on Apple which also goes into braille computer. DeafDigest does not know if she uses a tactile sign language interpreter since it was not mentioned in an interview with her.   -- captions turned off at end of the Derrick Coleman interview Derrick Coleman, who is deaf, is the #1 favorite player among deaf fans that root for Seattle Seahawks. He was recently interviewed on the NFL website, and yes, this interview was captioned. But at the end of the interview, the rest of the video was not captioned. Deaf fans watching the video were not too happy about it - and - screamed at the NFL. Anxious to make deaf fans happy, NFL has agreed to fully caption the entire video, and not just the Derrick Coleman interview only. What is next - for deaf fans that root for their own favorite teams to demand that team website videos be captioned. Will NFL do that? Hope so.
