-- first deaf accomplishment in Wisconsin
Suzie Helgerson, who is deaf, has accomplished something
which is a first in Wisconsin. She has become the first
deaf woman in the state to become a truck driver.
She made it after attending three months of classes
at Fox Valley Technical College and then driving
a truck for ten hours a day. What does her husband
have to say about it? He is a truck driver and
encouraged her to take up truck driving. Interestingly
enough, their daughter is also thinking of becoming
a truck driver! A picture is at:

-- An interesting Billy of Tribes
More small theatrical groups are featuring the Tribes
play, in which Billy surfaced as the leading deaf
character. DeafDigest mentioned few weeks ago that
a theatrical group in Iowa was forced to cancel
Tribes because of lack of a real-deaf actor,
instead trying to use a fake-deaf actor. Anyway,
at recent Tribes plays in California and Wyoming
and right now at the University of Northern
Colorado, the male Billy character was played by
Michelle Mary Schaefer! As Marlee Matlin once
said during an interview, male and female actors
are supposed to be capable of playing any roles.
-- heavy automobile traffic in Manila
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority
will be hiring the deaf for an important job.
To watch the automobile traffic in Manila
by watching these video cameras. Traffic
incidents such as speeding, road rage
driving, tailgating, and even some
accidents - will be reported by the deaf
and relayed to the police officers.
