-- selecting a deaf child as a mascot without an interpreter!
Newcastle United, in Great Britain, is one of the world's best
and most famous professional soccer teams, playing in the
world's #1 toughest league. This team selected Isaac Wassall,
a 9-year old deaf child as the Team Mascot for their
big game with the Manchester United. Isaac's parents asked
for an interpreter. The club refused! Why? They said it
was because of health and safety reasons. Right now many
people are very angry with the Newcastle United team.
How famous is Manchester United that Newcastle is playing
against? It is like Dallas Cowboys in football, New York
Yankees in baseball, and Miami Heat in basketball.
-- Detroit people cruel to deaf?
Are Detroit people cruel to the deaf? A deaf woman was in
a gas station when a man came to her, grabbed her text
phone and escaped in a car. Crying and terrified, she asked
the gas station employees to please call the police on 911.
They refused! The gas station manager said his employees
were also too terrified of the incident to make the 911 call!
At any rate, she went home and contacted the police. The
officers are looking at the video tapes in hopes of catching
the thief.
-- #1 person at one of the world's biggest libraries
The New York Public Library is one of the world's biggest
libraries. This library has about 400 employees. One
of them is a deaf man, Jaime Herrera, a native of
Colombia and a graduate of Lexington School for the Deaf.
He is responsible for training of all new employees on
his custodian staff. New employees, afraid they cannot
communicate with a deaf trainer, quickly learn their
tasks within a few minutes. And he makes the rounds
throughout the building, greeting everyone on a "first
name" basis. Jaime cannot speak but uses gestures and
easy to follow signs, that often makes everyone smile
and laugh.
