-- lucky to be deaf in one state
Thanks to ADA, movie theaters are required to have
captioning devices on hand for deaf patrons. Deaf
people hate these devices but have no choice.
It is different in Hawaii; state law requires
movie houses to show open captions (without these
hateful devices). How is this law working?
Some theaters show open captions twice a week.
Some show open captions every day with different
films. It varies from theater to theater as long
as open captions are shown. Responsible for the
law is legislator James Tokioka. His son is
deaf, hence the reason for the law. A picture

-- Fort Lauderdale tests a new deaf invention
Fort Lauderdale has become the first city in USA
to test a sign-language plug-in. It is supposed
to convert text to ASL for the benefit of
deaf residents seeking city services. It is
just a test, and not a purchase. If the deaf
people love it, the city may purchase it for
permanent use; if the deaf people hate it, well,
hope the city finds another way to communicate
with the deaf!
-- a secret of a cell phone carrier
We have four major carriers - AT&T, Sprint,
Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile. One of them
is trying very hard to make it a secret,
hidden from the deaf, that they have a
$20.00 per month data-only plan to help
the deaf communicate via text. Why is
it a secret? Because it is so cheap -
normally cell phone monthly rates go
into $125-$150 per month!
