-- European plazas & malls may be dangerous to deaf
European plazas and malls dangerous to
the deaf? Some of them are. Streets are
narrow, and some plazas allow cars to
drive through. DeafDigest editor once
ate at a sidewalk restaurant in Nice,
France - on a very narrow street,
where cars whiz by - often several
inches away. To solve this problem,
the Canterbury (Great Britain) city
council passed a rule that no cars
are allowed on some of its streets,
saying the deaf cannot hear horn
honking and cars whizzing by. A

-- two directors of two nations feud over own films on same story
Pradeep M Nair is a film producer from Malaysia.
Santhosh Echikkanam is also a film producer from
India. Both hearing producers have threatened legal
action over their films based on life story of Saji
Thomas, of India, a deaf man who built an airplane.
They are accusing each other of copyright violations.
Messy? Yes, very much so - and it was the same
reason why a movie based on Gallaudet's 1987 Deaf
President Now protest was never made - copyright
and other legal issues!
-- in auto accident, deaf text almost useless
a deaf man in Idaho had an automobile accident
where he was badly injured. He was driving
alone on an isolated highway. He texted a
hearing acquaintance, asking for medical
assistance. Unfortunately in his text,
he did not leave information about his
location. The frantic acquaintance called
the sheriff's office, giving them the
deaf man's text number. The sheriffs
tried to text the deaf man, but there
was no response. Fortunately after a
thorough search, helped by pinging his
cell signal off the towers, they
were able to locate him and bring
him to the hospital. Is there a
better way to locate stranded deaf
people than through text messages?????
