-- deaf people that refuse medical interpreters
could we lipread a masked doctor or a dentist or
even a health technician? No, if the mask is not
see-through. Yes, if the mask is see-through.
Anne McIntosh, a deaf woman who does not use ASL,
is trying to patent a see-through mask and then
market it among the professionals in the health
care field. Not every deaf person wants an
interpreter during medical appointments.
-- new captioning rules, good or bad
There is a new debate about new government rules
on movie house captions. It proposes to place
captions below the movie screens in all movie houses.
There are questions about it. Could the deaf person,
sitting in the last row, read the captions?
Would the deaf person, sitting in the front row,
read the captions comfortably? What happens if a
big person sitting in front of you blocks the
captions? And will movie ticket costs go up because
movie house owners would be forced to buy new
captioning equipment. So, is it good or bad?
-- a big reason for ASL classes very popular
at one high school, ASL classes are very popular.
There is a waiting list of students wanting to take
ASL classes. Why is it popular? Many hearing students
watch this TV program - Switched at Birth and they
say learning ASL is cool!
