He was a role model for many past students to look up to. DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Richard Hagen, Council Bluffs, IA, who departed us. He wore many hats - chairing the Iowa Western Community College interpreting program, helping students at Iowa School for the Deaf, giving advice on ADA portions that were deaf-related, etc, etc. Said a professional acquaintance: He was a real advocate for deaf persons in a variety of ways; he was always available to provide support to anyone that sought his advice. We've lost a good one. This just in - 40 deaf and hard of hearing would-be truck drivers are now allowed to drive trucks, thanks to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration waiving the hearing tests for them! They, however, are not home free, because they need to apply again for exemptions in 2015. What this means is that they must be accident-free and violations-free while driving trucks. Top stories about the deaf: It is Super Bowl time. Many of us will root for the 49ers; others will root for the Ravens. But all deaf fans will root for commercials which are captioned. Take a look at these facts: - cost to purchase a Super Bowl commercial approximately 3 million to 3 1/2 million - cost to caption a Super Bowl commercial just $200, much less than a ticket to the Super Bowl And if these big corporate sponsors say they cannot afford to caption their commercials, they are not telling the truth! Anyway, may the best team win! Will West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, in Romney since 1870, be relocated? This is what some state Board of Education members are asking. They are saying it is a choice between relocation and renovation. The school superintendent says that if the school relocates it must be at a town where the blind students can easily navigate their way around. Critics are saying the move will cost 100 million whereas a renovation would be just 82 million. The deaf of Thailand finally got an interpreter to appear on the national TV news program. This was a first in Thailand's history. In Great Britain there is a controversial TV program, titled - The Great Disability Scam. It profiles the frustrations the deaf, and the disabled face when getting hired and then losing their jobs. Australia's first Olympics (hearing) participant Dean Smith has been honored by the government with a Member of the Order of Australia. One deaf son, after graduating from college, was hired by his father. He told the son to start at the bottom and to learn his way up. He did - and many years later he is the company vice president. Another deaf son, after graduating from college, told his father he must start at the top and said he did not go to college to learn how to sweep the factory floors. A STRATEGY IN AN ENGLISH TOWN In Hartlepool, a small British town, the town health board is working on a strategy. It is dealing with late-deafness, after seeing so many town residents go deaf. They are saying approximately 15 percent of the town's 15,000 residents are already late-deafened for one reason or other. The strategy includes establishing a resource and referral center, encouraging residents to learn British Sign Language, getting interpreters and captions, etc. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being challenged by a workshop coordinator, that is asking "why are you here?" if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series There are a few different methods that court reporters, realtime captioners, or CART providers can use to create and build their main dictionary and other job-related dictionaries that will be used in translating the text.  Some schools offer prebuilt personal dictionaries to students, and some software companies offer dictionary building kits. Captioners often spend countless hours going through lists of names and unusual terminology in order to add those words and phrases to their dictionaries. Knowing what is in his or her dictionary is one of the most important pieces of information that a captioner can possess. If a captioner can anticipate how a word or phrase will translate when it is written, then the translation will be more accurate. If a captioner added the name "Norrell" to a dictionary, he or she might have to be careful if a story discussed how the information was "neither true nor relevant."  If the captioner did not think of another way to write it, that might translate as the information being "neither true Norrell vant." A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF being asked - why cannot a hearing aid (or a CI) help you to hear? (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry) .............................................................. .............................................................. Should NTID/RIT students, for the sake of nostalgia, root for the New York Giants? Why? Giants coach Tom Coughlin started his coaching career, of all places, at RIT! One of Coughlin's former deaf players said the coach was tough but fair. RIT no longer fields a football team, having dropped it after the 1977 season. ......
