News of the Week:
Deaf individuals attending the inauguration ceremony
need to take heed of the following:
- web site is at:
http://inaugural.senate.gov/2009/accessibility.cfm
- recorded TTY information is at:
202-228-1612
- interpreters? Yes
- captions? Yes
...
Gesturing and signing are two completely different
things; both methods are not interchangeable.
Yet, how important is gesturing in a classroom
setting? We are talking about hearing gesturing,
not deaf gesturing.
Do click on:
http://tinyurl.com/8ell7p
Simply put, it says that hand gestures help the
hearing understand words from a new language.
Big question is - is there a difference between
Hearing Gesture and Deaf Oral Gesturing?
This is another issue good for another round
of research.
...
Louis Braille, whose innovation helped the
blind and the DeafBlind to read with their
fingertips, is being honored on his birth
year of 1809.
The USA Mint will be turning out commemorative
coins in his honor. And in the other nations,
postage stamps carrying his likeness will be
issued.
As usual, no one is honoring the deaf for
their work on behalf of the deaf.
The listing of issuing nations are at:

DEAF FOLKLORE AND DEAF HISTORY
What is Deaf Folklore? What is Deaf History?
Same thing or different?
Deaf Folklore more or less is a collection
of deaf stories passed down from generation to
generation via ASL.
Deaf History is black and white evidence, with
many footnotes in history books, of events that
happened many years ago.
Both are interesting but different.

USA AND OTHER NATIONS
What is sign language in USA? Confusing like an

A COMMUNICATION FRUSTRATION
There was a story of two hearing groups an American that wanted to
practice German with his German friends. The German group, however,
wanted to practice their English with their American friend!
This leads to frustration with both groups. Now let us switch
this around -
What if a deaf oralist wanted to practice his speech with a group of
hearing people. But what if the group of hearing people wanted to
practice their ASL skills with him?
Frustrating, indeed!
KEEPING UP WITH TERMINOLOGY
We have many deaf individuals in fields where buzzwords come
and go.
It is almost always that a new buzzword would show up without
warning and its usage would spread like wildfire. And as usual
the deaf professionals in that particular field would be the
last to know.
Keeping up with the terminology is a lifetime challenge for
these deaf individuals.
An example would be:
send me the treatment
To send a person a treatment? Is it a medical issue as far as
health is concerned?
No. It is for aspiring movie script writers to send a 3-page
outline to the agent. This 3-age outline is called treatment!

LEARNING SIGN LANGUAGE IS "EASY"
Easy to learn sign language? Do click on:
http://www.shaister.com/5463-method-for-learning-sign-language.php
So easy? Nope. Very difficult to learn how to sign fluently.
A fluent signer just signs away, without having to stop and
remember these "sign language rules."
When one pauses to try to remember one of the rules, then
fluency is lost.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
interpreter called as "Interperator"

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
With computer-aided transcription (CAT), more and more court
reporters found things that they wrote on their steno machines
that would not translate with the correct spelling when written
phonetically.
New ways of writing had to be developed.
One of the things reporters found they had to change was how
they wrote certain vowel sounds.
What is a reporter to do with the words "pare," "pair," and
"pear"?
Before using the computer to translate their notes, most court
reporters wrote them all the same. Even after using the computer,
many reporters still found it easier to just let the computer
translate it as "pare/pair/pear," and then pick 1, 2, or 3 when
editing the transcript.
Some reporters found they could write "pair" differently, but
they chose to let the computer translate "pare/pear," and then
the reporter would choose between those two words when editing
the transcript.
It can still be a challenge for even the best court reporter or
captioner when writing at over 200 words a minute to remember
how to differentiate among these words.

Rusty Wales' Wine of the Month
Happy belated New Year to you all!
I trust all your sparkling wine popped with loud bangs two
nights ago! To start off the 2009 edition with a kick,
a new DG headline has been added. Also, as you might have
noticed, the trivia question will be replaced with a
Question from our Deaf Grapevine fans.
The intent is to entice more questions from our readers
and hence the dialogue continues. We have received many
questions in the past and responded with answers; however
they were never printed in this eNewsletter.
We believe our readers would appreciate knowing what these
questions and answers were.
It is our hope to hear from you and also have your support
to print your questions here.
Cheers,
Rusty & Bobby
