A correction
Last week's DeafDigest said that George Stailey
was coming back to Indiana School for the Deaf
(ISD) where he formerly served as the superintendent,
and that he would be the CEO.
The job title is not correct. He will be the
COO (Director of Operations), serving under the
current superintendent.
Why the error? DeafDigest editor read the announcement which said the position is CEO.
An inquiry was made and it was learned it is
the COO position.
Thank you for bearing with DeafDigest.
Dedication
DeafDigest Sports dedicates this edition to Patrick
Sweeney that departed us (during last week of
December 2015). He was deaf and was a long
time football and basketball coach and teacher at St Rita School for the Deaf.
Top stories about the deaf:
An internal government report in Scotland said that
the police do not know how to communicate with the deaf.
Zamir Dhale, a deaf-blind activist from India, was
written up in a newspaper story, saying he is the
nation's #1 authority on disability laws, as
applicable to the deaf and of the deaf-blind.
According to a web posting, the 1998 on copyright
protection, may prevent future inventors to improve
on the CI.
A deaf woman in San Bernardino, CA, suffered a
heart attack but was able to text 911 for
assistance. They came and saved her.
One of the new laws in Texas is to allow the
deaf to order special "deaf" license plates.

A BIG DEAF TALKER
Years ago there was a popular deaf man in a Deaf
Community. He was a big talker and always had easy
answers for complicated Deaf Issues.
He was asked to serve on an important committee
with the National Association of the Deaf. He accepted.
Did he help much with the committee? No, he was quiet
and silent all the time!

WHO IS BETTER DRIVER - DEAF OR HEARING?
Many hearing people think deaf people cannot drive.
We are successful drivers because we use
our eyes.
Many hearing drivers talk on cell phones, drive
too fast, break too many traffic laws, etc, etc.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
Being constantly asked this question:
How long did it take you to learn sign language?
Sarcastically remarked the interpreter:
I've been studying sign language for 15 years. When people ask
me that question, I just smile at them and reply "Hmmm, I don't
know. I'll let you know when I'm finished."
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Over the holiday season, many TV stations have featured special holiday-themed programming. We have seen special sports and entertainment shows. Now, as the holiday season comes to an end, we will find many TV shows beginning their new seasons.
Personally, I have seen a number of shows over this holiday season where the captioning has been absolutely fabulous, but I have also seen instances where the captioning was very poor or totally overlooked.
Unfortunately, there are people out there who do not think that captioning is important. They may try to pay as little as possible, so if that means poor quality captioning or no captioning, that may be what they will try to do. They may feel that no one is watching the captioning, so it doesn't matter.
As caption viewers, we should also be advocates for captioning. If we see a show where the captioning is horrible, we need to let the cable companies, television stations, and captioning companies know this. If the television stations are using people who are unqualified just because they don't charge very much, we have to communicate to them that that is not acceptable. We must let them know that someone is watching the captioning.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
being accused of lying when the deaf person tells
a hearing person he cannot lipread everything with
100 percent accuracy
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw
The EEOC was said to focus highly on deafness as a
barrier to hiring. A spokesperson said:
Said an EEOC attorney: People with deafness have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Providing equal employment opportunities to all deaf job applicants is not just the law, it is good for our economy and our workplaces

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
A deaf man in Waukesha, Wisconsin lost his case
in which he claimed that he could not use sign
language since he was handcuffed in the courtroom.
The judge said he failed to prove he was
hindered in his ability to communicate with his
attorneys or interpreters while being handcuffed.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Famous British TV star Rita Simons (EastEnders series)
has a deaf daughter, a fact that surprised the fans that
have loved watching her act as the Roxy character. Until
recently she did not want people to know about her
deaf daughter. Now, she is proud of her deaf daughter
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Few years ago we had a Deaf Relay scandal, in which
the federal government was bilked out of millions of
dollars in bogus relay calls.
Is this happening again? FCC fined one relay
provider recently for the same reason.
