DeafDigest - 04 July 2012

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, July 4, 2012 -- hearing prisoner interpreters for deaf prisoners! A class of 11 hearing prisoners in Louisiana graduated from a 3-year interpreter training program. Their new prison job is interpreting - for deaf prisoners! The state said hiring prison interpreters is much cheaper than hiring outside interpreters. There are about 2,000 hearing impaired prisoners in state prisons and about 35-40 of them are ASL prisoners. Prison officials say deaf prisoners get along with prison interpreters better than outside interpreters.   -- Comments from a retired teacher of an oral school A retired teacher at an oral school had a confession. She told a deaf newsletter reporter: * I felt that some children have a more difficult   time in lipreading and I've regretted that all   children be required to stick with it * I have regretted that children do not learn   fingerspelling * I've never regretted that the deaf communicated   with each other with signs * Those that cannot sign are cut off from those   that do. * I've always defended the deaf that do sign That teacher did not know sign language, but always supported it!     -- A sour milk warning for the deaf This is a crazy device. A team of middle school hearing kids from New York won the second prize at a national school science contest, beating 250 teams from 15 nations. Their science project? A flashing signaler to warn deaf people of their sour milk! Is the new device better than our noses that we use to smell?   -- $2.99 is the cost of a captioned program Push Girls is a program on the Sundance Channel cable network. It is about disabled women trying to become successful in life. The cost for hearing people watching that program, without captions, is free. The cost for deaf wanting to watch captions is $2.99. Already there are deaf people complaining that they have to pay to watch captions. The Sundance Channel sort of said "too bad" when the deaf complained about it.   -- Nicolas Sarkozy, former French president, knowing sign language? Does Nicolas Sarkozy, past French president, know sign language? Do look at the video - but there is a warning; some suspect the signing was faked. Do compare his signs with the signs of the interpreter in the box. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXHM8dFk6zk&feature=youtu.be   7/01/12 Blue edition at: http://35.182.75.222/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 7/01/12 Gold edition at: http://35.182.75.222/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
