DeafDigest - 04 July 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, July 4, 2014   -- South Carolina sheriff insults the deaf A newspaper story ran this morning about the Union County (South Carolina) making plans to install text-to-911 services. While discussing this with a newspaper reporter Union County Sheriff David Taylor said "What we have now is for people who are deaf-mute." Very possibly the sheriff was not aware of it but calling us deaf-mute is an ultimate insult. Not too far from Union County is South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. Perhaps the Union County government needs to send Taylor to the school for an attitude adjustment!   -- a sign language restaurant in Toronto opening up on July 16th is Signs Restaurant, located at Yonge and Wellesley in Toronto. While the owners are hearing, the servers in this restaurant are all deaf. Hearing patrons will order their meals through a cheat sign language cards. The restaurant theme is "where noise meets silence." Hopefully the owners will give opportunities in the restaurant as chefs, shift managers, general managers and maître d'. We do not want to see deaf employees locked into dead end jobs with no chances for promotion and better pay!   -- a legendary deaf athlete retires again For the second time within three years, deaf Ultimate Fighter Matt Hamill has retired. Why? His fighting injuries would not go away. We will remember Matt for two accomplishments. He was the rare college wrestler that won three national championships in three different weight classes. And also for defeating Jon Jones, the best Ultimate Fighter ever. Yes, it was a win by disqualification but it is Jones' only defeat.   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest to make subscription changes, go to http://deafdigest.com, click on the "subscribe" icon and follow screen instructions 06/29/14 Blue edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 06/29/14 Gold edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
