Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Steve
Ferrughelli, that departed us. He was deaf and was a
hard running ball carrier in the Canadian Football
League during the seventies. He played for Rutgers
and became a pro in the CFL, rushing for 1124
yards for Montreal Alouettes in 1973, and
then repeated it with 893 yards in 1975. He
helped his team win the Grey Cup. Altogether
he played 43 regular season games and for
2763 career yards between 1973 and 1976 with
the Alouettes and Edmonton Eskimos. Injuries
cut short his pro career. He did not know ASL
and functioned as a hearing person.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Amy
Hile, Greater Washington, DC area that
departed us. Deaf herself, she made Deaf
Education her full time passion and career.
Before moving to the Washington, DC area
she was busy founding the Metro School
for the Deaf in St. Paul. MN. In recent
years she was a member of the faculty at
Gallaudet University.
Top stories about the deaf:
Scotland is said to have become a leader in
recognizing sign language as a main language
and in producing new interpreters.
Because of Brexit, the British Deaf Association
has made it a priority to make sure that the
British deaf do not lose their rights that
were promised them by the EU.
The Ghana Disabled Workers Union, which has
many deaf members, are planning a demonstration
on July 13, 2016 to protest delay in distribution
of monthly disability income checks (just like
our SSDI).
Harvard, which has had a number of deaf students
in the past, is now offering ASL classes. It
was the request by ASL-advocates that prompted
the decision by the university administration.
An issue with Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) is
private schools and the ADA. He wants private
schools to be exempt from ADA, and is proposing
legislation to this effect.

REMEMBERING A DEAF CROOK
We have several deaf crooks that are in jail
for their crimes.
There is one deaf crook that DeafDigest editor
remembers very well.
That deaf person was a chairperson of a big
deaf national softball tournament. His committee
spent a lot of money for the tournament, but
it was a flop. Few people went to the tournament.
Few months later the committee had a party. The
deaf chairperson gave a short speech. Everyone wanted
to know if tournament made money or lost money.
The chairperson would not admit anything. Suddenly
he pointed to the table with delicious food and told
the committee to grab the food. The chairperson
then "disappeared" from the party. Did he steal the
money for himself?
That person is in jail but for something else.

SIGNING A WORD 50 TIMES
If a hearing student in ASL class wants to sign
a word perfectly he must sign it 50 times. For example,
if you want to sign the word "fire", it must be
signed 50 times before it will be perfect.
Whose advice is this? A hearing student at a high school
ASL class!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As computer-aided transcription (CAT) began to be used as a method of
transcript preparation for court reporters in the late 1970s and
1980s, there were still many court reporters who had learned steno
theories that were not "computer compatible."
These court reporters had been preparing transcripts of proceedings
by dictating their steno notes for typists, using trained note
readers to read their notes, or typing their notes themselves. They
had been trained to write on their steno machines phonetically, and
any words that sounded the same would be differentiated during the
transcription process.
As a result, when one of these court reporters would begin to use CAT
to prepare a transcript, there would be many issues with homophones
and word boundaries.
A simple sentence for a reporter just beginning to use CAT might come
out something like this: "We/wee went from hear/here to/too/two
their/there/they're."
Someone editing this transcript would have to choose the correct
homophone in each case so that this sentence would read as
follows: "We went from here to there."

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Is Starbucks telling us "do come and drink our
coffee but do not ask us about your job
accommodations"?
There is a lawsuit in Canada; a deaf Starbucks
employee has complained of job discrimination.
Starbucks encourages these Deaf Coffee events
at their coffee places everywhere in USA; this
lawsuit is very troubling, even if it is not
in USA.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Ernest Garrett has been hired by the Missouri Commission
for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as the new executive
director.
editor's note: He only stayed on the job for a short
time for a very good reason - he is the superintendent of the Missouri School for the Deaf
