-- Marlee Matlin is a happy person
In a tweet, Marlin Matlin said something interesting. She
said she is glad she is deaf - because she does not have to
hear 10,000 girls screaming about Justin Bieber. There are
two differences between Matlin and Bieber. Matlin is not a
singer. And Matlin does not get into trouble, which is what
Bieber is always getting into!
-- Supreme Court says no to interpreters
The California lawsuit (CART vs interpreters) reached the
Supreme Court. The deaf students in high schools wanted
CART and did not want interpreters. The school districts
wanted interpreters and not CART. The students filed a
lawsuit. It went to the Supreme Court. The justices
refused to listen to the case and said school districts
must provide CART.
-- owner of a machine shop
The Liverman Machine Shop in Raleigh, NC has been family-owned,
and in business for 30 years. Two things unusual about
this business. It is deaf-owned, deaf-operated shop with six
full time employees. While the owner is deaf, it is a woman.
The owner is Mary Baker, who bought the business from her father
and has continued to run it. Many deaf women own businesses,
but we do not see any of them owning a machine shop! This
business provides parts for toy, furniture, medical and
electronics clients. Her biggest challenge is to keep up with
rapid technological changes and to deal with up and down economy.
She is planning to hand over the business to her son when
time is right.
