- What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Sally Keyrouz, a deaf saleswoman at the MySize, a clothing store for women in Australia, is quite popular with hearing
patrons. She knows how to help the patrons select right
clothing with right colors and right designs. As described
by an associate, she is efficient, passionate and helpful.
She did not start out to work at the clothing store, as her
previous jobs were dead ends - mostly distributing mail
at offices. Her boss said:

Sally is very good at putting customers at ease, especially as many of our customers have body image issues

Judy Hodak, a deaf ballet dancer with her hearing partner,
won, danced to the "Sound of Silence" theme with music
being turned off - and won rave reviews from the judges
at the Buckeye Ball in Youngstown, Ohio. One of the judges
said it was the first time he saw the music instead of hearing it. This deaf/hearing ballet team practiced this routine
for one year before entering this regional competition.

- Very Hot News

The Japanese deaf community is upset over the refusal of
the police to provide an interpreter for a deaf woman
who was involved in an automobile accident at
Kawasaki City. After discussions, the police apologized
for not providing her with an interpreter, saying they
did not know what the procedures were. Additionally
the police promised to set up new procedures to deal
with future requests.

- Sunday August 28th

The Harkins Theatres have agreed to install captioning equipment
in all of their moviehouses. This will be effective by the end
of Year 2012.

- Monday August 29th

Sencity is a disco in London that has been described as
deaf-friendly - with a vibrating dance floor, sign dancers,
a deaf rapper, and with smell aromas being spread out on the
dance floor. This was written up in a newspaper story.

- Tuesday August 30th

The Zambia National Association of the Deaf has announced
its endorsement of Zambian president Rupiah Banda and his
political party in the upcoming national elections. Reason
was that Banda has showed sensitivity for the needs of
the deaf and the disabled.

- Wednesday August 31st

The Deaf and Hearing Connection for Tampa Bay has
announced that its Boutique, a thrift store, will go out of business. Proceeds from the store have been earmarked for agency programs for the deaf and the hard of hearing. No reason was given for the closing.

- Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

The federal court ruled in favor of two Mobile, AL police
officers for tasering a deaf man in a bathroom few years
ago. They were being sued on basis of civil rights
violations. The judge said the police officers were
performing in their official positions.

EASY OR HARD TO LIPREAD
Most hearing people are not easy to lipread. Very few
hearing people are easy to lipread.
A hearing person, whose lips are impossible to lipread,
complained to DeafDigest editor that it is not fair that
her lips cannot be read while some other hearing people's
lips are easy to read.
DeafDigest editor told that woman:

No two hearing people have same lip movements.

REFUSING TO LEARN SIGNS AT GALLAUDET AND NTID
For a new learner of sign language, attending
Gallaudet or NTID is the right time to learn ASL.
But for reasons of their own, there are students
at Gallaudet and NTID that refuse to learn
sign language.
After they graduate, some of them realize they
must learn sign language.
What do they do? They go to sign language
classes!
It is sad that they have wasted their years at
Gallaudet or NTID, refusing to learn sign language,
and have to go to sign language classes after
they graduate.

DEAF USING THE INTERNET TO TRACK LOST SIBLINGS
Bill Denny, a deaf man, was given up for adoption
upon birth in Michigan. He never really knew his mother or father, much less his siblings.
He never knew he was adopted until he applied for
a driver's license and was told that his real last name
was Denny. Since then he has made heavy use of the
Internet and he succeeded in tracking down a half-brother
he never knew he had.
While he has moved to Arizona, he is still using the
Internet - his next mission is to track down a half-sister.

CARING MUCH OR NOT ABOUT DEAF CAUSES
A pro athlete, after attending a fund raising event,
said:

We all came here because one of our own asked us to.
We all have our own causes that we are passionate about and we know how important this is to him. So when he
asks, we say yes

Well, how many famous athletes would attend a
fund raising event that is deaf-related, which has
nothing to do with deafness research or with CI?
Possibly none.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

Some people may have been hesitant to request Communication Access
Realtime Translation (CART) services in an educational setting
because they thought they had to hire and pay for the services
themselves.  However, according to the Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA), CART is a legitimate auxiliary aid for people who are deaf
or hard-of-hearing.  It has also been confirmed in the courts that it
is a reasonable accommodation for those people. There are a number of
laws related to CART and the requirements to provide
it.

Some CART providers may be employees of the university or school
system, while others are independent contractors hired to cover
specific courses for specific students.  Many times the university
contracts with a CART/captioning agency to provide CART services for
whatever classes may need to be covered, and that agency will then
use their employees or independent contractors to cover the
classes.

A NATIONAL LANDMARK IN BAD SHAPE AT GALLAUDET AND KENDALL!
There is a building, registered with the National Register of
Historic Places, that is located at Gallaudet and Kendall.
What building? Exactly where on the campus? Not on the
Gallaudet campus, though!
It is the Alexander Crummell School located on Gallaudet
and Kendall Streets, NE - outside of the Gallaudet campus,
but near it.
There was a newspaper story about that building, in decaying
condition, and people not knowing what to do about it.
Not Gallaudet's problem, though.

TO BE DEAF AND TO BE ISOLATED

There are newspaper stories saying that technology will
render obsolete our sign language  - and that the future
deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their
peers - and that deafness will be completely eradicated
thanks to the CI and genetical engineering.

True or false?

DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example:

A man who became deaf because of a high school football
injury (a blow to his head) has isolated himself for the
rest of his life, sheltered by his protective family.
The only time he went out was to play softball with a
deaf team. He could not communicate with his deaf teammates
except by gestures, and half of the time he could not
follow his teammates' gestures. At the end of that softball
season, he was never seen again.

next week - another example

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

The Ida Institute, an organization of professionals in the
Hearing Care field, ran a series of seminars trying to help
individuals deal with their hearing loss without feeling
stigma about it. Their findings were published in a recent
Hearing Loss magazine.

.......

The Deaf and the Law:

The deaf Britons, many of them, agree that the legal system
has not been good to them. Problems range from lack of interpreters
to judges not really understanding what deafness is all about.
This may change as several attorneys and several agencies working
with the deaf are demanding improvements. Still worrisome are
cuts in funding for legal services.

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Effective with the opening of this academic year, Pennsylvania
School for the Deaf (PSD) has added a new grade - the 9th grade
or the high school freshman class. This is a significant step
inasmuch as PSD closed out its high school department in the
early eighties - as a political compromise when the school
was threatened with government funding cutbacks.

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

A group of deaf fans, that root for the Washington
Redskins, filed a class action lawsuit against their
beloved team. The suit to force the Redskins to caption
their public announcements.
Some years back a fan that rooted for the San Antonio
Spurs (NBA) filed a similar lawsuit. The deaf man lost
because of a technicality - the Spurs do not own the
AlamoDome and only leased it for home basketball games.
Will the deaf fans of the Redskins win? According to
a deaf attorney that follows this lawsuit, the Redskins
own FedEx Field and therefore is obligated to provide
captions as required under ADA's Title III.
The Redskins attorneys, of course, will counter with
their own arguments why they should not be forced to caption
their scoreboard.

......

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

A 90-year old deaf woman was placed on a wrong plane in Scotland
by a flight attendant who did not follow specific instructions
from a family member.

Asked an angry family member:

I would really like to know how this could happen. How can an
airplane have an extra passenger? Take off with an extra passenger?
Especially with the security that they say that have today.

The airline has offered the family a full refund with credit
towards future trips, in addition to paying cab fare from the
wrong airport to the deaf woman's home

....

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

During an office party, a coworker brought in a cake
that were designed in baby diapers.

I thought the coworker said:
for a friend's 20 points

the coworker actually said:
for a friend's twin boys
